I have an '03 xb9r with about 14k miles. Tonight I went out for a ride and as I got up on the highway I noticed a pinging noise coming from the right side of the engine. I didnt think much of it but I continued on and almost made it back home. The bike suddenly lost power and the rpm's dropped. Next I heard a clanking noise coming from the cam cover and the bike died. It won't start back up and its making an awful clanking noise as it cranks over. Anybody have any ideas what this problem could be? Thanks in advance |

Do you know if the oil pump gear is the new version or original? Maybe you lost oil pressure?? |

Really sounds like you lost oil pressure. the pingy sounds were probably the lifters. I hope I'm wrong. |

How hot was it outside? How about the bike? On a couple rare isolated occasions, I've had the bike idling for too long in traffic during 100 degree weather. With insufficient airflow, the engine overheated. Lifters got loud, then they collapsed. Once that happens, the valves won't open fully (or at all) and the engine won't run. Unless you really boogered it up, give it some time to rest, cool down, and let the oil flow back to the lifters. They are hydraulic and need oil for operation (not just lubrication)...unlike the majority of other motorcycles out there. |
