I just went with the Mobil 1 75-90 Gear Oil. The argument that Mobil 1 is readily available is what I went with. Granted, if you have to add tranny oil, you're probably already on a tow vehicle to the local HD/Buell Dealer. Amsoil has a big ad push on the web, but that only makes me a bit suspicious.

That's what I did. I took the 250 dollar first 2500 service down to about 130 bucks by doing my own fluids. I meant if you're on the road and needing to add tranny oil you are already in a lot of trouble. Sears carries a screwdriver with the star end and I fit a wrench on the handle to add a little torque when taking off and on primary case window screws, careful though... If you went 3700 miles on your stock oil, you need to get it out. Careful with the lowers there are small plastic washers try not to lose them, it'll keep you from overtightening the screws when you reinstall.

It's all in the maintenance section. Bring bike up to level, I use a wooden block under the side stand. Remove larger lower window, if you don't level the bike first or keep it level until you re-install window oil spills out the bottom of window. Remove drain plug. Manual shows where oil fill should reach the bottom of the visible plate. I find one quart is the right amount, others say a couple of onces less. Close window with screws and torque about a quarter of a turn, I need the wrench on the screwdriver handle for that.

Also when you remove the window, the clutch inspection cover, there is a spring that just slots into the clutch adjustment screw. Nothing holds it in other than that inspection cover. Don't let it drop out into the tranny. Remove it and when you are ready to put the inspection plate/cover back in, put it back.

Also, don't forget to drop by the dealer and pick up several of the cover gaskets. They're only about $1.50 each. You're supposed to replace it each time the cover comes off...

Steve.

I have changed oil 3 times now and I am still using the same gaskets, just snug them down nice and easy. No leaks after they warm up the 1st time. They are cheap to replace but sometimes you'll do more damage to the cover scraping off the old ones.

The primary/trans fluid capacity is 1 quart. But what you have to realize is that you can't get all of the old fluid out even if the engine motor is hot. So there will be a couple ounces left. So follow the (not so clear) directions in the manual for checking the level. Keep track of the actual number of ounces you used and next time just add that amount. Mine takes something around 28-29 ounces (I marked it on a bottle of 75W-90 that I for measuring when I change fluid).

From personal experience, a full quart at a change makes it real difficult to find neutral and shifting is not so smooth. YMMV.

Mike.

Don't over-tighten those bolts going into the case either...I had to give myself a crash course in Helicoils the same day I changed my tranny fluid because I'm so friggin' strong at the arm. Nevertheless, using Mobil1 75-90 now and did overfill by about 2oz first try...You will know if it's over filled because you can't find neutral while at a stop light.

as far as the border licence birth certicate or even better a passport just tell them your going for a tour of winnipeg

take hwy75 over the border until you hit the perimiter hwy then head west and the hwy loops around the city take the route 90 exit and take that until you see the giant HD logo on the roof
and your there

the XB oil filter is the same as a Toyota Corolla (believe it or not) so this makes it a bit easier to find at the parts shop and a lot cheaper - I'll look for the exact part No. and corolla model year.

Walmart ST4967 is the same factory-made oil filter. $1.97 last time I checked. Same AA stamp on the top. Just peel off the sticker and your local HD/Buell tech will be unable to tell any difference. There isn't any. Yeah, works in the Corolla's too.

2 questions

1. What engine oil are you guys running? Mobil? I'm in Phoenix and am considering changing to synthetics. (I know this has been discussed a bunch of times, sorry for asking again.)

2. Can changing the trany and motor oil be done without a stand?

Mobil 1 15w50 full synthetic is great and cheap.
Mobil 1 VTwin (20w50) full synthetic is great.
Amsoil full synthetic is great, but not magic and a little disengeneous in their marketing.
Royal Purple full synthetic is great.
Harley Screamin Eagle full synthetic is great.
Any full synthetic is better then any non full synthetic.
Non full synthetics, if changed regularly and put in a properly tuned bike, are just barely "good enough".

There. Hopefully that won't stir up any flame wars.

You can get a long steel rod (rebar) and put it through the hollow back axle, and put it on a pair of jack stands, and the bike will stay upright. If you feel lucky, you can put a 2x4 under the sidestand, and get the bike almost straight upright, at the risk of a tipover. You can use tie downs (and maybe a comealong... a cheap hand operated winch type thingy) and suspend the bike straight upright from a stepladder, or from your garage rafters.

I've done all of the above (except the tipover bit, I only do that loading trailers)

I like the bar through the axle idea. It would work for the front too. I have hung mine from a support beam on a friends porch. I also set it on two jack-stands under the rearsets with a couple socks in between. After getting it on there I used a strap around both jack stands to make sure neither of them moved. I like the bar idea, but of course it wouldn't work to remove a tire...

I would think that while changing oil you would want to lift the front in this manner so as to be able to drain more primary oil out.
