What's up with this 182 mph???
What kind of motorcycle were you on and can you prove it???
Were you riding with Mr. 420 at 145???

I think those bikes were running on 420 and so was the rider.

Yeah, Come On'

Guys,

I went 150 in third, shifted to fourth, saw 160, nearly had an accident in my shorts, and shut it down. This was on a friend's stock ZX12. It was still pulling so hard at 160 it literally scared me. If it was not limited to 180 something, I believe the bike would easily go over 200 mph.

i made my sporster pull 6800 rpm in 5th gear at the dragstrip near palmer, AK. i was running the G carb on gasoline, final gearing was 21:48, and i HAD TOOLS, CAMPING GEAR, SPARE GASOLINE AND OIL ALL ON THE BIKE. and i even had a muffler on. i could have easily shed 60 pounds in the pits before my run, but i was on my way to the state fair, and was supposed to be meeting my wife, and just made two quick passes on my way by. i dont run speedometer on the sporty, but that calculates to 135mph. i have not figured out how to launch the XB yet. I have to be real gentle with the throttle in first and second gears. i cant get enough weight forward on the bike to keep the front down. i am pretty sure they are not designed for dragracing.

oh, i should add that my terminal velocity was acheived 60 yards beyond the quarter mile mark. i only made 128 in the quarter. it was a lot harder getting the whole pile stopped at the end. almost went off in the weeds. everyone should run flat out on a dragstrip at least once in their life.

MCN UK tested the 04 R1 at 177.72mph though editor Michael Neeves says in his write up '180 plus'.

I can go with that but what is more telling is how quickly bikes like the R1 get there. This 180 ability makes it easier for anyone to find roads that allow speeds of 150 + more achievable and it soon becomes addictive and to some second nature.

It's not to often that I've explored 150 + speeds. like most of us a few IL 4 Japanese bikes have took me to the higher echelons of speed sometimes. Now I find myself the owner of a bike capable of such high performance it's hard not to exploit these once legendary speeds - often.

Be careful out there.

If I would get a kick out of such great speeds I would have gotten myself an R1, fireblade or a whatever else thing that everybody else has...

Apart from it's superb handling and the ease with which you can play around on it, this bike has endlessly more character than ANY other bike I've seen and been on.

Kind of missing the point with a Buell. The 'Busa sure did rip, but....it is a big lady.

Good point...if you want to go fast, never get passed, proceed straight to the 'Busa.

I'll be back here in the corners playing.

'busa is not the top dog. The new Kawi ZX-10R will do 186 in stock form. It also only weighs right around 400 lbs wet.

New Kaw ZX-10, 104 mph in first gear. (magazine results subject to speedo error) Neato. Let's see, nice specs, ( the ton in first! ) but Not the bike I wanted after the GS-1100.
I'm too old & fat for a Ducati replica racer. I don't fit. Sure be pretty in my dream garage/playroom.

All Japanese bikes are restricted to 300kmh (186mph) starting in 2001. The '99 and '00 Busas were unrestricted. I have seen published top speeds between 190 and 194 mph on those model years.

The ZX10R with a full fuel tank weighs 430 lbs.

Yes, I pick nits......

I was hinting that the new Kawi is very close to an XB12 in the weight dept. I am quite sure that it will do well over 186 with some minor mods also. It just is a really cool bike.

9.92 sec@147 in the quarter mile also.... As posted by Sport Rider

Who is willing to do these speeds? If so, I will send you an organ donor card with a direct gift to my family. We might need one given our general lifestyle!!

Not me... I just like looking at the stats! (that's why I bought a Buell and not an R1) I am still a strong believer in the character of a bike over the performance.

My next bike will probably be a ZX10... I like the power delivery (or at least the look of the power graphs) and there are a few racetracks around here.

I took the opposite approach... I've there and done that . The thread seems to have been started about me (thanks shred) When I was done tweaking my VTR1000 I didn't put it in top gear until 150mph, if I was givin' it hell. The Buell is still the funnest bike I've ever been on. If y'all (yes I'm from the south) are wanting to get an in-line four platform for the "fast in a str8 line" thrill... I recommend borrowing someone else's bike doing it a couple of times. Then the thrill will be gone. Especially if you get passed in a turn by a more nimble handling machine. The corners are where the fun is. See you there.
