Hello all!! Super new here so please bare with me.
I purchased a 03 buell xb9s this summer with only 4,400 miles on it. The bike already came with a K&N air filter and slip on jardine exhaust original tires and brakes which I had to replace. She ran fine just like I knew she would lots of power and just road like a dream. I did notice a little popping when off the throttle but from what I read that came with using a jardine exhaust. Fast forward 3 months, I was taking a ride on a nice sunny Saturday afternoon when all of sudden I felt some hesitation and power loss between 3-4k rpms. I was able to make it back home and preformed a visual inspection to find nothing visually wrong. I chalked it up as possible fouled plugs. I did my research and found that the plugs needed to be changed every 5k. I already did my normal maintenance oil, oil filter etc just didn't do the plugs (my fault). When I was changing the plugs and wires out I noticed they were the original wires and plugs. At this point the bike now had 6,600 miles on her and again I just assumed it was with the plugs. After I installed the new wires and plugs she ran like new!! Two weeks down the road and it happened again. Now I do have a brother who builds bikes but on the Japanese side of road but regardless he has some knowledge about engines. He was telling me it definitely has something to do with the fuel and plugs. We just can't figure out how to fix it?? Should I go to cooler plugs? or possible reprogram the ecm to adjust for the air filter and exhaust. Mechanically the bike sounds great so I don't think it could be anything to do with the seals or valves. I do know both times the plugs went was after I have riddin the bike in high temperatures which again isn't good. I have made my calls to HD dealerships and techs on various websites and they basically said all the same things it's either too much fuel or possibly ecm issues. Either way I'm looking for more advise before I make my next moves. From what I read on this site it seems everyone here knows a lot about these bikes and I would appreciate any info. Thank You in advance!!

Anthony

what kind of plugs are you using?
you can't use normal water cooled bike plugs, you have to use high temperature plugs or they will just break again. if you are using high temp plugs then it may be the quality of the fuel your using, I heard too much water or oil in the fuel can foul plugs.

Or if you recently switched gas stations (some older gas stations still use fuel with MTBE instead of ethanol)and the recent switch to ethanol caused it to bring up some debris and crap that was sitting in your tank (ethanol acts like a cleaning solvent)

Begin with a cylinder leakdown test to determine the condition of the cylinders/piston/rings....if the leakdown is within spec....procede otherwise.
