What is the average for the clutch life on a 12R, that likes some clutch-ups, a few passes at the drag strip, and just an all around aggressive rider. I'm at 17k miles on my 08 right now, and it seems like I am needing to adjust my clutch between oil changes. It doesn't slip all the time right now, but if I get on it hard in the higher gears at times it will slip after an upshift until I let off the gas a little. I am using Mobil 1 Full Synthetic in the Primary, but not the Vtwin, just the standard auto stuff. Could this be the cause? Should I make the switch to the Vtwin, I've finally found a place locally that carrys it, for not too much more than the auto oil. |

that's a lot of adjustments! I adjust mine every time I change the primary oil but not out of necessity. is the clutch dragging when you adjust it? I don't know about the mobile 1 automotive/cage grade but have heard that some oils have friction modifiers that are very bad for clutch plates. check for the Vtwin at advance auto parts too, my local shop carries it and has decent prices. |

It doesn't seem like the clutch is dragging, maybe a tiny bit if at all. My main concern is the oil, next change I guess I'll pick up the Vtwin oil and give it a shot. |

What weight are you using? |

Dump that primary oil and look for more then normal shavings... Then put the HD stuff in and see how she goes. |

How does it shift? Have you noticed more mis-shifts lately? |

I'm using the recommended weight oil, I can't say I've noticed more missed shifts, it happens, but not often. Neutral is being a real PITA to find as of late, but that seems pretty typical. |

are you adjusting your primary too? I find many xb's out of adjustment causing shifting concerns and the owners are convinced their clutch is toast. Warm up the bike, drop the fluid, loosen clutch cable, adjust the primary, adjust the clutch, fill primary 1 qt with harley snyc, lube & tighten cable. |

I adjust the primary pretty religously. I like how smooth shifting the XB can be when everything is in adjustment. Its actual slippage of the clutch, not harsh shifting. |

The engine has TWO clutch adjustments that are required - are you doing both? It could also be the that the viscosity in your oil is shot with the drag runs... change the oil (Sportster, Mobil1, Royal Purple, Formula +, GL4, Shockproof, MTL, Syn3, Amsoil... yea, you get the idea - there's plenty to choose from, they all work). And see if it's better - your description sounds like the oil now has the properties of PAM Drag racing is REALLY hard on a motor & driveline (not sure if you had your oil primary gear upgraded???), but as with all motorsports - if you want to play like a racer, you need to PAY like one too... so be well prepared to spend money and time in relation to how hard you push it. |

I am making both adjustments of the clutch, the little screw under the cover, and the cable adjustment. I'm thinking its just the oils shot too, I was paying attention to it the last couple of nights, and the clutch doesn't slip until everythings good and hot. Time to change out the oil, kinda of early for me, ~1700 miles right now, but now that I can find the Mobil 1 V-twin locally I'm going to give that a try. Currently I am running Mobil 1 Full Synth in both holes, just not the moto oil. |
