All, Picked up some bar risers today and really didn't like the way they looked after installation - so I threw the bars back on without the risers so I can be ready to take it for a spin tomorrow. However, when I finished I noticed I have about a 3mm gap between the top clamp and bottom clamp at the rear of the handlebars. Front of the clamps are snugged together. I followed the service manual (I think) - turned each bolt in a few turns in sequence so the top clamp would come down evenly, and then tightened front bolts first, then rear (pretty much the way I've done every other bike I've owned). Seems like there was a small gap in the rear of the bars before I started but I'm old and don't trust my memory - can anyone confirm? Second question, service manual says to use Loctite 271. That seems pretty darn strong for those threads. I put a drop of Honda Medium on each bolt and even that made me nervous... is everyone using 271 on the handlebar bolts? there will be a gap. Torque to spec and you'll be good to go. I like to tighten them down so the gap is even. no loc tite on mine! With SS bolts going into aluminum, it is entirely uneccessary. But the standard will be good. |

Andy, thanks. I'm going to give the risers another shot tomorrow. I've never used loctite on other bikes, but the torque spec was generally higher on those as well. I'll see how it feels tomorrow. |

Cmostech, depends on how much rise you want. I put Precision Engineering 1" risers on and they were great for me. Nice thing about the 1" risers is that you can use the stock cables. You could also go with another bar style with more rise without adding risers. |
