Four of my friends went to the Dragon a couple of weeks ago, one of them crashed right in front of US129photos, he caught the whole thing on camera... He low sided doing about 20MPH or so he thinks. He is a little banged up, but ok. Two cracked ribs and some road rash. Bike is battered a little, but not real bad. They had pulled the bikes up there on a trailer, so it wasn't too bad coming back home. I had planned on going, but my son wasn't able to get off work, so we passed. Ouch. Did the pavement smack some gear sense into him? Good for him he rode away. Catch a floorboard, gravel? | ||

Just by looking at the pics, it appears he got into the corner too fast and too deep, target fixated, grabbed a handful of front brakes(no rear at all)and tucked the front. Had he not got in too hot and deep, evenly applied BOTH brakes and looked through the turn, he might have made it. Lets hope he and others have learned something from this. Even if it is to wear proper attire when riding to prepare for just this type of incident. I call it "dressing for success." Glad he is (somewhat) ok and will be able to ride again. Ride safe. Ride often. | ||

Good thing he had on a full-face helmet. Looks like the second thing to hit the pavement would have been his face. I think Penguin's right that he panicked & grabbed the front brake. It looked like he had a pretty good line and lean angle. He might have made it through fine if he just hadn't touched the brakes. Well, hindsight is 20-20; glad he's OK. | ||

Actually, he broke his front tooth also. He said he thought he might have clinched his jaw and that's what broke his tooth. I forgot to mention that. Brand new helmet from "Cycle Service and Salvage" here in Dothan Al . The best place for motorcycle parts and service. I think he had it for a whole two days. But, that's what its for. After looking at it closely, you guys are right, looks like he grabbed the front break, he is a newbie, and especially on the Dragon. Not a good place to learn, but I feel bad, I was the one that set up the ride.. I've been there several times, but then again, I'm on a Buell that loves the corners. When i get done with the dragon, it respects ME!!!!!!!!. LOL. JK I haul ass, leave the cruisers behind, but wait for them every so often. That's the only way I can enjoy it. That might not be good, but it's fun. What a trip, if you haven't been there, make sure that's one of the things you plan on doing one day. | ||

I hope he at least hit hard enough to knock some sense into him. Riding on the US129 in a t-shirt and sneakers is unbright. Riding any cruiser anywhere near the limit of where you'd put a board down is unbright. If you don't know the machine you are operating don't approach that gray area. He's damn lucky he wasn't far more seriously injured. | ||

Court, I'm hoping he'll ride again, not sure. He may decide not to.. I dunno yet. He is looking on Craig's list for parts to repair it all, I guess that's a good sign. | ||

You can go frame by frame where his hand is completely wrapped around the grip, then starting to reach for the front brake, then front brake firmly squeezed, then crash! | ||

(Not so)Brightbuell, where's the logic in not wearing full protection while riding a "cruiser station wagon"? You just looked at photos showing an accident involving a "cruiser station wagon" where the rider would have been protected from injury if he had been wearing proper gear. The type of motorcycle has no correlation to the safety of the operator- a rider is equally vulnerable on a scooter, a cruiser, a sport bike, or any other you care to name. The first rule of safety is dressing for the crash, yet this most basic measure of motorcycle competence is the one most ignored by riders. It never ceases to amaze me... | ||

You know what? I crashed 3 or 4 years ago (riding a great looking 4L vintage by yamaha ... I totalled it) and I was wearing shorts and a T shirt as I was coming back from the beach. Modular helmet with visor and chin protector up. Doing 40kmh or so. When I fell the first thing that hit the ground were my lips. Now you know why I do always have a leather jacket on and a full face helmet all the time. And I don't give a shit about bikers riding naked. | ||

Some of those pics looked painful. Like some have said, good thing he had a full face helmet on or that might have been ugly, no pun intended. Also, I bet he wished he was wearing a jacket. | ||

Those pics are indeed painful to see. He was in for a rough night as all those scabs dried and shrank! I'm glad I got roadrash out of my system with bicycles as a kid. I'll never forget that bad landing after a jump where I drew on the road with my knee. | ||

I'm really surprised the term "road crayon" has never caught on with the motorcyclists. I've only heard it in the bicycle crowd. It just seems far more applicable to the MC folks though. | ||

Sifo, You are absolutely correct, after reviewing the photos in depth, I see what you saw. Wow, he did grab the front break. ====== I've done it, most have done it, but not more than once for most of us. ok maybe twice.  But the end result is very similar. LOL. That is the number one mistake (in my opinion) that most new riders make. Great observation my friend. You nailed it! I'm calling him right now to show him that. Maybe it will (as they say here in the south) "learn him one"  | ||

Macbuell, Spot on. Even with the full face, he still broke his tooth. He said he thought he bit his teeth when it happened and that's why his tooth broke. I will say this, he just ordered that modular helmet with blue-tooth and all. scratched the shit out of it...... Ody | ||

We were just there last weekend, the cruisers were crashing left and right. We saw one bad sport bike crash, but the majority were cruisers. That place is just not made for the big/low bikes I just don't know why they want to go there  | ||

this guy isn't very smart at all. I have grabbed the front brake on my xb9sx and immediately regretted it. even if i was just testing out the bike after i got it back from the shop and was only going 5-10MPH i have on full gear at all times. call me a girl or what have you, if i have learned anything in the past 5 years in the Marines its this, SAFETY FIRST. you have the gear for a reason so use it. |
