I bought a 2003 XB9S a month ago and I LOVE IT!!!!! I have noticed that after I start the the and then put the side stand up it starts making this whirring noise (not the fan). Does anyone know what that is ? } | ||

Is the sidestand hitting the drive belt? | ||

Yes it sounds like an electrical whirring but it keeps going . | ||

Depending on the fuel level, the noise the fuel pump makes ( actually the regulator ) can be fairly loud at times. | ||

I think the fuel level is low. Maybe thats it but why would it start when I put up the side stand ? Sounds dumb. Maybe it has something to do with the fuel level and standing the bike upright. | ||

aren't the kickstands wired as a safety kill switch on certain years?He's probably not using his handlebar kill switch and turning his bike on and off with the key.So when puts the kickstand up his fuel pump is priming. | ||

Yes, 2003's have the side stand safety switch, Maybe that is whats happening. | ||

You can not start the bike with the fuel pump off, so if it was the side stand switch, you would not be able to start it. Can't offer an suggestions to the noise though. | ||

well if he's comparing it to a jap bike then yeah the fuel pump does make some noise.And yes you can hear it while it is running if you listen.And yes the less gas you have in the tank the more noise you're gonna hear.I fill up around 110 miles unless I'm highway riding some distance.It isn't good to run it low all the time.If you aren't using your handle bar on/off switch and you leave it on run position then when you turn the key on and then lift the stand your fuel pump should kick on.You see you are using your side stand as a on/off switch for the bike.That is not correct but if you had your manual you probably know this by now.You won't hurt anything but I don't suggest doing this out of order.If you are starting your bike before the fuel pump has time to pressure up you are harming your fuel pump each time you do this.just my 2 cents worth/ | ||

Are you sure you are not just hearing the primary chain? Might want to check the tension and oil level. When the bike is on the kick stand the oil level is a little different than when the bike is standing up straight. Does the sound speed up with throttle? Something else to check. I can hear mine. | ||

on my 03 9R if the bike is off yet in gear and i turn the kill switch into the on position the fuel pump will not kick in untill i either put my kickstand up, pull in the clutch or put it into neutral. the bike will start in gear with the kickstand down and clutch pulled in, yet if you try to take off with the bike in first gear and the kickstand down the bike will kill itself as soon as you start to let out the clutch | ||

Get a cheap automotive stethoscope at Harbor Freight and try to pinpoint it. | ||

If you just bought the bike then it sounds like a to tight primary change. Recheck and readjust if needed. |
