just had a bad ride. I ride a 2003 xb9r and have 3700miles on it. Just had the front wheel lock up at 80 mph.I never got down but doing a stoppie that fast is pretty wild(left wierd looking skid marks for about 150 yards w/ front tire).I suggest anyone w/3000 miles or more, to tear your bike apart or take it to dealer check it out.I pulled my apart and the bearings were shot. THINK ABOUT IT!!!!! My bike just come from the dealer the day before,getting a new rear tire put on,now i am going back to have aflat spotted front tire replaced. | ||

There was a wheel bearing recall. Were you riding the new (orange) or old (black) wheel bearings? Man, that must have been scary. Good job hanging on to it and not going down. Mike. | ||

There was a replacement order for the 03 bearings with the black seals. Was yours this type ? | ||

I never did get anything from the dealer that I bought the bike from concerning the bearings, but I did get a note from Buell about it. I think i was nearing 8K when I got it done, though. YMMV | ||

I fought my dealer on it. They believed me, I am "Buell guy" or whatever, but the computer did not agree. After about 20 minutes they took the bike and fixed it that day. | ||

just had it at the dealer the day before putting tire on rear and they never mentioned anything about bad bearings(OUGHT TO PUT IT BACK TOGETHER AND LET THEM TEST RIDE IT_HA HA HA} | ||

That's the only one, 420, but there was a sidestand announcement as well. If your's has the shorter sidestand you can get it replaced. I still have the short one, no problems with it. Just don't park the damned thing nose-down! | ||

LOL...couldn't tell you - never measured it. IIRC, the new one is slightly longer and extends farther forward when down. If you haven't had a problem yet, and your nearest dealer is 300 miles away, I wouldn't worry about it. Do a little digging using the search function and you can turn up the old and new part numbers and go check yours. If it's a '03 XB9R chances are you have the original, shorter stand. | ||

Hmm. At 7900 miles, my rear wheel bearing popped the seal, releasing the grease and exposing the bearings. They were not the orange-colored ones. Luckily, I was close to a local dealer. They had them in stock  and replaced them at no charge. However, it was almost quitting time so I did not have them replace the front bearings. I just turned over 10K miles. It might be time to get them to do it... | ||

Hee,hee! I guess I should give credit where credit is due! The dealer was Boswell's HD/Buell of Madison, TN. I pulled in at 5pm (they closed at 6pm) thinking "man, I'm gonna have to leave my bike, get a ride to pick me up, figure a way to get back here when they are done...yadayadayada". Fortunately for me, they got right on it and had the bearings installed within the hour. Needless to say, I was pleased...  | ||

well made my trip to the dealership.I bypassed the service man at the desk and found the head mechanic.Iasked him if there were any recalls on my ride and his comment was "no".I then proceded to ask his to see the Buell recall service manual and his comment was "he never seen one" Finally I went to the head honcho office and asked him.3 offices later and tearing them all apart we found the bible.Alot of stuttering was going on then because right there on the pages were the notices for the bearings and the kick stand.Like usual they didnt have any of the parts so it will be friday before i know anything. The recalls were issued in july 2003 If you need these codes they are as follows: wheel bearings front and rear, code# 9203 kickstand code is #9205 to identify the new kickstand it will have a "R" stamped on the foot and on the mounting bracket. if your 2003 doesnt have this and your wheel bearings are black sealed, better see your dealer and give them these recall codes.The buell service rep is suppose to be getting in contact w/ me according to my dealer,we will see what happens.The dealer says they are going to replace anything damaged in the accident,front tire-front fender-air box cover(scratches from the bushes i went thru) I will keep you updated and please check out your rides!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! | ||

Ok I have a 2003 XB9S and this is like the second time I had the dealer look my bike up in their system using the VIN number and they claim there are no safety recalls for my bike. Are they blowing smoke up my rear or looking in the wrong place? | ||

If you have the orange seal wheel bearings, you're good. I haven't heard of but one S that had a kickstand issue. | ||

Krassh, The recalls for XBs were for the ones made before certain dates, I believe it's pre-2003. So for newer XB9s, there has not been any recall. The VIN number includes the manufacturing date. | ||

I had the back bearing go out on me sunday going 90. Not a very fun speed wabble. Stranded 90 miles from home on the side of the rode. Mine were the black bearings too. | ||

the bearing if I remember correctly was a product program upgrade. so it won't show up as a recall on the puter. but it still a freebie. and as was said the kickstand and bearings were mostly the very early xb's and no I ain't surprised that the idiots at the dealership didn't know. remember, your talking about an HD dealership....they would only know about a recall on the clothing line or some spotty chrome. | ||

I actually got a notification from Buell for the wheel bearing replacement. My bike is a very early 03 model. According to my dealer, Buell sent them bearing for each bike they had sold that required them. They did not have to order them. | ||

Years ago I had the distinct displeasure of being assigned the unwanted job of "Safety Engineer" as a side task for a company that made large industrial equipment. I had the opportunity to be intimately involved in many product liability cases defending my often defenseless company. If I worked in the Buell legal department I'd be firing off some very strong worded letters to all dealerships making them prove that they took every reasonable means to find every Buell with wheel bearings that are known to have a problem. Thank GOD that neither of you men were hurt or worse..... Blake - Question: As a public service, could you put up a banner on this site that says to check for black sealed wheel bearings? Anony - Not to be an alarmist, but IMHO this is a BIG deal & not a simple warrantee issue. | ||

yes jersey, this is way far past a warranty issue. this is a very serious safety concern. i was under the impression that all vehicle owners had been notified by the factory on the wheel bearing deal. i am surprised that people are still riding around on BLACK SEALED WHEEL BEARINGS WHICH CAN SEIZE UP AND LOCK A WHEEL WHILE YOU ARE RIDING AND POTENTIALLY KILL YOU. | ||

Jerseyguy, The problem with that though, is that Buell never called it a safety problem in the first place. There has been a lot of arguing here over that point in the past. But your point, I totally agree with. | ||
