Amsoil 20W50 is what I use. I noticed an immediate difference when the fluid was changed at first service. |

Piotr12... so you are using Amsoil 'engine oil' in the primary? Can you describe what was the immediate difference you noticed? Did you switch from Formula + ? |

Yes, I am using Amsoil in the primary as well as the engine. The immediate difference I noticed was a quieter engagement (no clunk) into first from neutral. Also, the shifts were smoother and more precise. I am not sure what was in the primary before. Factory oil? |

Thanks, I might try that. I use Formula + (Harley primary fluid), changed with every service but the trans is hard shifting and clunks into every gear... 09 XT with 6K miles. |

Just make sure the Torco isn't a gear oil with sulfides. (It sounds like it probably is.) That stuff'll eat into your stator, and cause premature failure. Everyday synthetic motorcycle oil is what is universally recommended. I use the thinner Mobil One for the primary, I think its 10-40, theory being that it "splashes around" better, for improved cooling/cleaning. Again, gear oil is discouraged because of the sulfides. There's tons of info on this topic/concern in the archives, with plenty of anecdotal stator failures. |

Bcmike, you may need to adjust your primary chain tension, and/or adjust your clutch cable. |

Just make sure the Torco isn't a gear oil with sulfides. (It sounds like it probably is.) Apparently not; it's specifically marketed for motorcycle transmissions/wet clutches: http://www.torcousa.com/technology/060908114113MTF .pdf It says it meets or exceeds GL-4 requirements. IIRC, the gear oils that cause the problem are GL-5 rated. On point though, according to Torco, you should probably use MTF-E 85W, which replaces SAE Motor Oil Grades 10W40, 15W40, 20W40 & 40. |

So far, it seems fine. I've only had it in there for 20 miles or so and shifts nicely. Good reviews from what I have read so far. |

Another link...... http://www.torco-oil.com/v-roadracebike.html Hughlysses, looks like they do recommend the MTF-E for larger CC bikes. Difference is the weight of the oil I guess. |

I pulled this right off of a Redline label: "MT-90 is recommended for all manual transmissions and front-wheel drive manual transaxles which recommend motor oils, or GL1,GL3 or GL4 gear oils". "Most GL5 gear oils contain reactive sulfur which can chemically wear synchros and shorten synchro life by 50%". It doesn't even mention the "yellow metals" issue, but of course that issue is unique to Sportster architecture. I think its fair to say that GL5 is a big no-no, and anything else containing sulfides. I personally decided to stay away from gear oils entirely, just to avoid any uncertainty. No point in trying to "out smart" the owner's manual; its recommendation works wonderfully and without problem. |

i just picked up some mobile 1 20w50 for my bike the other day for an oil change and once i got home i realized i should probably do my tranny while i'm at it, could i go back and get another qt of mobile 1 20w50 for my tranny? or is that a bad idea? |

No, it's a good idea. I've used Mobil 1 and Amsoil 20w50 in the primary/trans. Seems to shift much smoother than Formula + dino lube. The Amsoil 20w50 label actually specifies it is for Buell engines and primary/ transmission. |

My local bike shop is trying to peddle this stuff to me. Says GL5 on the label.
Is the Mobil 1 for v-twins or does it matter? |

Don't do it. GL-5 not good, read some of the good post on that in this thread. I recommend the Torco MTF-R 80W

I use Mobil-1 V-twin oil...just be careful that what you use does not have sulphur in it...GL-5 usually does....if it has sulphur, it will kill your stator. |
