This is the single biggest pucker experience I have had in 18 years of riding on the street. Going east on 20 in Waterford (Main St.) the van in front of me decides to make a faster than usual courtesy stop for two pedestrians about to enter the crosswalk. I happen to be following about 50 feet behind the van, myself having just pulled out into traffic, and relaxing on the throttle after matching pace with traffic. I took one look to the left, at a building, and when I looked forward the van in front of me was stopped!. It's about 15-20 feet away, and I'm doing 20mph or so. I got on the front brake so hard the ass end of the bike came up, hung there for a half second or so, and came back down to earth without much disruption. I was a foot off the van's bumper, and the guy eating in the diner to my right had his fork half in and out of his mouth, absolutely frozen, eyes as big as pancakes. I looked around a bit, nothing broken. No touch between any of the vehicles or pedestrians. So, I did another 150 miles today with my new-found appreciation for self preservation. Stay safe, and don't rubberneck! |

Stay safe, and don't rubberneck Amen to that, brother! One of my worst habits. Glad you have good reflexes(and brakes). |

Don't play with the GPS to troubleshoot the crappy XM radio reception either. DAMHIK. |

Good to practice stoppies in a parking lot so you know how the bike handles... your maximum braking comes with that rear wheel about an inch off the pavement. I was doing them during the MSF advanced rider course on the XB9SX. I wasnt sure how that would go over, but I got a thumbs up from the instructor, probably because I was in total control of the bike. |

i recently took a basic rider's course here on base (mandatory). it was awesome. we did some emergency braking drills. i got the back end off the ground a few times, but i was also stopping the fastest out of our bikes. i suggest highly that you take the course, or at least do as Reepicheep said and practice. my bike still surprises me how good she is at everything. don't be scared of it, just respect what it's capable of. glad to hear you were quick on your toes. or should i say fingers?

Yes, I want to take an advanced rider course, just so I can be a better street rider. A track day with a teacher would be even better. |
