This is the single biggest pucker experience I have had in 18 years of riding on the street. Going east on 20 in Waterford (Main St.) the van in front of me decides to make a faster than usual curtesy stop for two pedestrians about to enter the crosswalk. I happen to be following about 50 feet behind the van, myself having just pulled out into traffic, and relaxing on the throttle after matching pace with traffic. I took one look to the left, at a building, and when I looked forward the van in front of me was stopped!. It's about 15-20 feet away, and I'm doing 20mph or so. I got on the front brake so hard the ass end of the bike came up, hung there for a half second or so, and came back down to earth without much disruption. I was a foot off the van's bumper, and the guy eating in the diner to my right had his fork half in and out of his mouth, absolutely frozen, eyes as big as pancakes. I looked around a bit, nothing broken. No touch between any of the vehicles or pedestrians. So, I did another 150 miles today with my new-found appreciation for self preservation.
