My 03 XB9S has about 12.2K on it. Stock belt, probably more than a dozen track days (I've lost count now!). My belt now looks like this: The flat finish marks (or, the ones that look more grey) are where the belt teeth are. The glossy, black marks are where the sprocket teeth contact the belt. I know those marks have been there for at least 500 miles; I'm not sure how much longer than that they've been there. Are they anything to worry about? Similarly, the squiggly line has me worried. I just noticed that after this week's track days... I didn't think of it until just now, but my first guess might be something stuck in the lower belt guard? I have the upper guard removed. However, I would expect a straight line mark if something was stuck in the belt guard, not a squiggly line... Thoughts please? |

Wow. I've never seen a squiggly line like that before. Make sure you have a spare, and run it till it breaks. Or, put on a new one and use that one for emergencies. Nice and worn in makes it easy to change on the side of the road. |

This is a bit of a long shot but my Uly had similar squiggly marks (not as much amplitude in the peaks if you know what I mean) and that ended up being a pebble sitting at the front of the front pulley. It wasn't small enough to get jammed and was just hopping around slightly and marking the belt. It would only take a minute to check. The other effect of the horizontal marks beat me. It does look very shiny - is the tensioner free to rotate? |

I saw the same sort of dark patches on pictures of an 03 belt during the week. It had snapped which may just be a coincidence. I'd get a couple of belts before they are NLA, put a new on one and keep that as a spare or you could run that one until it dies and have a new one ready to swap. |

All the 03 belts will do those horizontal marks between the teeth. Normal, nothing to worry about. The squiggly line, I agree it may be a rock in the front pulley guard, but it looks very even so I am not sure. |

I'd still get at least one belt. It is not beyond possibility that the belt will supersede to an upgrade that includes idler, pulleys, master cylinder, and belt guards. The list of tuber parts that are NLA is growing, and 2003 XBs will follow. |

Thanks guys - I'll check for a pebble later on, I've just been too lazy since getting back from the track! As for the marks, good to know they're normal. I thought about picking up a spare, but if this one ever goes I'll probably just upgrade to the stronger 04/06+ belt anyway. |

I have 20K miles on my 03 belt, and I don't have any lines on it. It may be normal, but it isn't guaranteed. |

The squiggly line is more than likely some of the material used to to make the belt. The reason it is showing through the outside surface is because the belt tensioner puts alot of pressure on the outer face of the belt |
