Ok, so I just finished putting my 2008 firebolt back together today (had the frame and swingarm powdercoated and all plastics painted). I also went BACK to the stock exhaust (was using a hackjob). I went to fire up the bike, and it took a little while for it to start (more than I though necessary even with no fuel in the system). Once it started, it stumbled and sputtered and had trouble finding idle and the check engine light came on and it died. It smelled like it was running very lean. So then I thought, hey I probably need to do a TPS reset since I just went back to the stock exhaust (so I went ahead and did the on the bike TPS reset) and it fired up and ran a bit and died. I started it, reved it up a little and the throttle wasnt very responsive and tried to die upon opening the throttle, the check engine light came on again and it registered as a Code 36 (yes I know thats the fan code). So I double checked the fan to make sure it was plugged in, as well as I checked the fuse (the fuse is good). I then try to start the bike again and now it wont start. I really dont think I fouled out the plugs (of course its a possibility though) Does anyone have any insight as to why it was running so crappy? And does code 36 cover anything other than the fan? Thanks, Chris |

haha sorry guys, yes the problem is fixed. Here is what the ordeal was all about. I tore the bike apart for all the powdercoating and painting. Once I got everything put back together and tried to start it the fuel pump wouldnt cycle. So with that being the first issue at hand I started checking everything. I was getting power to the pump (but I couldnt find my service manual), I didnt know the voltage it needed to cycle though. So I proceeded to check everything else (the wiring harness from the pump to the fuse box and back. Well I disassembled the fuse box to ensure (1) power was going to the fuel pump and (2) to ensure there werent any shorts/grounding issues. Well everything was good to go there and I narrowed it down to being solely a fuel pump issue. So I pulled the swingarm back off and pulled the pump. Guess what....one of the connectors popped off when I was installing it and I never knew it. So I put the pump back in and cycle the key and sure enough it cycled. Well I put everything back together and started it up. Well here is where the big dumb animal part comes in. I was so relieved to finally figure out the fuel pump issue I totally forgot to reassemble the fuse box and so that is what was causing the rough running condition because it wasnt making contact to the fan or the ignition very well. Once I realized that I hooked everything back up and reinstalled the fuse box it now runs like a dream again. So there ya have it! |
