If in fact you did starve it for oil? You had possibly " extreme break-in" now the rings valves etc. are past the "seat" phase and into "wear" or "worn" phase and burning oil again. This is all my own speculation.

Good luck !

None taken. My Mom used to tell me "as smart as you, sometimes your that dumb".

In my defense, I thought the XBs were more reliable and got even more so in 08. My roommate got his 03 xb9r with 1900 miles and didn't have touch between oil changes. I thought new bikes were basically get on and ride... I was wrong

I checked the tranny oil. It looks to be the exact level that I left it at.

I checked the bottom of the air box. There was no splooge and the filter was white as can be.

I didn't check the spark plugs.

I put another 50 ml or so in and went 10 miles. I didn't bother to check the level before I left since it was co pletly cold. The bike felt plenty powerful on the ride. It was 2 xs down from the top of the "good" level.

I will now check the oil weekly

Until you figure out all the quirks and characteristics of your oil situation, I'd check it 2-3 times per tank of gas. I might just be paranoid though. Oil is pretty -blank- important.

blackandchrome-

I have an 09xb12ss, I was consuming oil at the rate of a full quart every 500 - 750 miles. The dealership said that was "within specs". I know better, I have been doing aftermarket hd parts for almost 8 years, and have never seen a bike use that much oil without dripping or smoking. I finally took it in to have some "sweaty gaskets" replaced, my bike is still under warrantee, and when they took my motor apart they "found" that the piston in the front cylinder was slapping on the case, and destroyed both the piston and the case! Because of the warrantee, my bike now has a brand new motor at only 8500 miles. I highly suggest that if you had taken your bike to the dealer to address the issue before your warrantee ran out that you take it back there, and tell them that you are not satisfied, and demand that they take the motor apart and inspect everything, free of charge. Sometimes your problem can occour if the rings are not seated properly. If you do not receive satisfaction at the dealership, then I would contact corporate for hd, and make a stink until something gets done.

F-bomb!!!!

I took it to work today and took the long way in. I went about 10 miles, stopped for 30 min, then went another 10 miles. I checked as soon as I got in to work. I'm barely getting a reading on the dipstick. Smoke was coming out of the dipstick hole and the oil was black and slightly bubbly.

I was supposed to take that 100 mile trip today. Looks like I'll have to take my truck instead.

I'd rather just drop the bike off to the dealer as is. Would they give me a hassle with drummer or should I just put the stock pipe on?

Interesting. I don't lose more than an once or two every 5000 miles with synthetic Mobil v-twin.

Slightly bubbly oil is completely normal. Your oil pump is a positive displacement pump, it will pump air just as happily as it will pump oil. The scavenge side of the pump has a higher flow rate than the feed side, so oil will never be pumped in faster than it can be pumped out and back to the tank. There will be air bubbles in the oil being returned to the tank. Those bubbles are on top of the oil in the tank, and have a low probability of getting sucked back into the engine from the pickup opening near the bottom of the tank.

Multi-weight oil turns black very quickly compared to straight weight oil. If it doesn't smell burned, I wouldn’t worry about that either.

I called my "local" buell shop. Earliest they can take a look is July 27! looks like I may have to drive several hours to find another one.

It was so nice out today. It really killed me not making the trip and concert.
If my warranty is up, what would you say probably needs to be repaired. What would be the ballpark of the damage$. I don't know if I can wait a month. I may have to put my old bike back on the road
