My import buddies all have the tag mounts under the tail between the passenger pegs. Looks so much cleaner than plate hanging from under the tailight IMO. Found only 2 threads relating to Buell laydown/undertail plate mounts, both DIY custom jobs. Neither has a light mount. Has anyone else done this? I'd like to do this on my Firebolt. Buddy suggested 3/8'' bar stock to fab up some mounts. Gotta drill into the undertail and wire up the 3-led plate light I got from ebay. Would also like to put it on a hinge (no, not for gunrunning!) so can adjust the angle it sits at. Anyone else done it?

Found these 2 threads

You can use the stock bracket. Just have to bend it a little and flip it.

Looks good....I would have mine as an undertail if it was legal in Florida....here an undertail will get you a fat ticket.

These guys are right about bending and flipping the bracket. You can find custom tag lights simply by a goggle search.Well that's how I found mine anyway. Not sure on your state laws but in Oklahoma blue lights will get you a $200.00 fine. You can only have yellow or red in the rear and the tag light must be white. Now I am No stickler for rules but the laws I do try to abide with.I am only mentioning this to help.

I've seen you post that before Fast. Have you had an issue over in Auburndale? Them boys that bored over there? I ran my tag like that for a couple years and never had an issue. It was clearly lit and visible.

If you use the stock bracket and bend it you could buy "lightening Bolts" to mount the plate. They are stainless steel with an LED in them. They come with the light shining out the side as well as with the light shining out the bolt top (What for I don't know).

Mine has been that way for years. Ive never had a problem with the police. (knocks on wood)

I just realized that I dont have hardly any pics of my bike from the rear. This is the best I have. Its still really clear to see so I dont see why it would be a problem. The biggest problem I have is riding in the rain I get sprayed bigtime from the back wheel.

I never really liked the look of that, and I think I now know why- 1) our "import buddies" like to do it that way, and 2) it does not look natural...def looks modded. Completely my opinion, you probably don't like mine! But here's what I did:

It's a fairly recent law...it was passed along with the "wheelie law" and other such bs....local cops have it out for sportbike riders...

Cool thanks ya'll. Rpm that looks pretty cool, the other pic is blocked here at work!!

@Andy- we all got different opinions, no biggie! I have similar setup to yours now, it's a custom Pegasus fender eliminator, although dunno if I can mention the company here, dunno if they're sponsors or not!

I know Florida is super strict about that stuff, and Maryland is kinda strict but not as. Everyone I know has the undertail/laydown tag similar to my posted pics and what Rpm has.

Ya'll suggested using the stock fender, so guess I could use the stock fender eliminator, make a bracket to attach it to my undertail? Maybe hinge it so I could raise/lower it for visibility and to clear the "rear tire guard plastic thingy" to put it in dumb terms haha. The one that gets all the rocks stuck between it and the swingarm!

@Andy, If you want to mount your plate like your import buddies you have to mount it vertically off the axle.

Yep I have no pictures of my bike from behind apparently, but I've got an old one from the side. My plate is mounted similarly to Rpm4x4, and this side shot shows why it's a good way to go,it's clean and doesn't detract from the lines of the bike. From the side its practically invisible:

Also no brackets or kit needed, just screws.

Go to lowes and buy 3 pieces of pre-cut/pre-bent roof flashing, a rivot gun, and a led light for 40 bucks total and make one. Then u have the tools and experience for life.

Anyone ever ride with you Andy? My wife is an average built woman. My tag was in the exact place your is. If we were cruising pretty fast and hit a good dip in the road, my plate would rub the back tire. I ended up putting it up underneath flush with the under pan.
