I tried to search, but it just isnt working for me... So my x1 was stolen, I'm going to be buying another Buell ASAP. But for around 3k I can get an x1 white lightning, or around 4k I can probably get an XB12. Is it worth an extra 1500 bucks? I love the x1, but I'm thinking maybe a 05 or 06 will be more reliable and a nicer ride. Any thoughts, esp. from anyone who owns both a x1 and XB?

The XB is a night and day difference over the X1. They sound the same, but the XB is superior in weight, handling, braking, reliability, plus in general parts are more available for them due to the higher production vs the X1.

See if you can find someone to let you take one for a spin and see if you like it. It is less raw than the X1, so it would be hard for my to say whether you will like it or not.

I see, yeah I will definitely do that. The dealer has a 2006 XB12s for 6100, maybe ill test drive it at least. I'm def not gonna be able to pay their price for it though. But maybe they're trying to get rid of it...

What about insurance premiums???? I was thinking a newer bike would have a higher insurance rate than an older X1...

As you can see a few threads down, someone got a 08 XB12S with 1 mile on it for $5850. I would either haggle over that 06 or look elsewhere.

Insurance is hard to say, depends on the company, and the bike and so on. Firebolts cost more because of the damn R in the name, despite being nearly identical mechanically and value to the Lightnings.

i've got a firebolt, and my buddy has a X1, we switch bikes for fun every once in a while, and i've got to say that i still like my bike way more! its easier to ride imo, and handles much better! the bike is just smoother all around as well i think. yet kyle loves his X1! he cant keep up with me in the corners though 1. b/c he's just not got the confidence and 2. b/c my bolt handles better than his X1

but test drive both if you can thats the best way to figure it out

Great question - the answer is going to have to come from your heart though.

I like the performance upgrades of the XB, but the comfort and primitive feel of the Tuber series won me over.

But look at it this way, you can't go wrong with either choice!

Ian, confidence/skill is 80% of the equation. The bike makes up the last 20%. I have no problem on my Blast hanging with a pack of 1125's as long as we are going below 80mph : )

"They sound the same, but the XB is superior in weight, handling, braking, reliability, plus in general parts are more available for them due to the higher production vs the X1."

I have both. The XB has some refinements to it....which are "nice"...and is also why my fiance rides the XB. They sound nothing alike...not even remotely. My X1 is a loud, raucous, shaky beast of a machine that I can take corners on as quick as on the XB. It's the difference between a the '69 Camaro built by my hot-rod, drag-racing neighbor (950 hp Big Block, BEAUTIFUL car that is stupid fast and has a built suspension that is tuneable to be able to drag race and "road race") and a Z06 Vette: both are nice, both are fast, both handle well....but I'll take the '69 any day of the week.

I basically never ride the XB anymore, if ever given the choice I choose the X1.

i wouldn't buy a buell older than 05-06 as harley is only providing parts for 7 years, so the newest year you can buy is the way to go. So that means for this year 2003 buells don't get any support and next in 2011 , 2004 models will no longer be supported get the picture. 2008 and 2009 or 2010 if you can get one is the way to go.

That is not correct. They have said they will provide parts for 7 years...which will be for all Buell models. And if parts availability is the reason, I'd take a tuber any day of the week because so many more of the parts a re standard HD parts and will always be available.

You will also likely see almost all dealers clear their shelves of ALL Buell parts- everything will need to be factory ordered soon at most dealers. :-/

Either way, neither are a concern to me in terms of parts.

Owned both, and loved both... but I'd pay more for an XB over a tuber for sure.

your wrong 7 years is what the feds mandate, for dot approved vehicles cars and bikes. So harley is only obligated legally to support and parts for 7 yrs, from its date of manufacturer.

2 year old left overs aren't going to get an extra 2 years of support. As of October 2009 - 7 yrs everything is loosing support and parts. So right now the longest any buell will be supported is 6 yrs. 5 months.

buell engines have alot of different parts from the standard sportster, some parts interchange and alot of others don't, they don't even use the same oil filter.

The current xr1200 is engine is basically a xb1200 engine, all other sportster engines have very little in common with xb buell series.

My feelings are is that harley will do everything it can to eliminate itself of responsibilty for supporting buell as soon as it can.

There might even be some aftermarket company that could contract with harley and take over support. There are all types of service companies around the world today.

Again going back to the legality thing, they are not legally bound to provide parts. Please site the law requiring them to do so.

not sighting law, this is what harley anounced period. We all know when they closed buell and sold off the remaining inventory. & 7 years from the anouncment. Law is meaningless, 7 yrs. and they are done.

well for those who need a legal answer ,I just called the FTC federal trade commission and they said manufacturers are only obligated to provide replacement parts for as long as a warantee is in effect on a vehicle. So it seems 7 yrs is provided at harleys discrection.

Also from what I read it varies and its hard to get a legal answer but 7-10 yrs. seems to be industry standard.

well as has been noted on this board a lot, you can get parts for bikes that have not been built for decades. and so I wont stress.

The other thing to think about is they said 7 yrs, this is from the current "administration" whoes to say that wandell will even bee on staff that long? hell look at how many CEO's leave after a few yrs, with their golden parachute.

and if the parts biz is still profitable enough whos to say they wont continue? which is why "kits" such as the '10 wheel arnt available I'm sure. Much more profitable to sell individual parts than a kit ata discount.

another quick thought, the 7 yrs isnt out of generosity based on nightrippers last post.

if you have bikes out there with extended warranties, say 5yrs, and your still selling new bikes that have 2yr warranties.. TaDa! 7 yrs. I would bet that at the end of 2010 they discount all the remaining bikes and consider them used, so no more warranties to worry about.

Geez, quite a discussion. Seems to me like maybe I will just go with the best deal then, because like Satori said I'm not stressing. Esp. if BADWEB is still around!
There is a white lightning X1 close by, but then this 07 XB12scg thats up in phoenix for 3500.

do you think that sounds reasonable? I am just worried about insurance costs now, cuz it wasnt too bad with the X1 but a much newer bike would probably cost more. Thanks for all your input fellas

Bluzzit34

I just bought a 07 XB12STT with 4K miles on it for $4500, it was a great deal.

The XB's are great handling bikes and are fun to ride, I started tearing into my M2 as soon as the XB was registered. I miss riding my M2 now though, still mid project on it. The XB is very refined, and there are things it can do that my tuber can't, but I think I like the M2 better.

One really nice thing about XB's is that the steering lock is part of the ignition, so no worrying about trying to ride off with the steering still locked like a tuber, better/safer security in making locking it up a habit.

You should probably arrange a ride, they are very different beasts.

That's a good looking mostly stock appearing Scg for a great price, worth looking at if you're not set on a specific bike besides just Buell.

Sorry to hear your X1 hasn't been recovered.

Bluzzit34, it is a hard decision. I am a tuber guy but have had a few XBs. The XB12Scg is just fun. I have had a XB12R, XB12X and the XB12Scg. I would pick the Scg over anything. (sucks getting your bike nicked, happened to my 97 S1)

Tubers, they are great and raw and I liked the comparisons made.

I cant say that I understand all the talk on the 7 year parts deal but I know that I can keep the motor on my tuber going long after the last 1125 is gone. I can get all the parts I need from the local HD dealership (thing sporty motor) and this is 15 years after the bike was made. Buell specific parts are different, there is some bodywork not available although most of it comes up on ebay sometimes. (I am making a list of parts no longer available)

I will tell you something about HD. I used to ride a shovelhead... Try getting parts for a Shovel or better yet a Panhead or any old HD at a HD dealership... Not going to happen.

You have had an X1... Try a XB. You cannot go wrong. Since you are posting this on the XB board you may have already made your decision. I say, as long as you are on two wheels you are doing good. On a Buell, any Buell, you are doing great.

Anyone can ride a XB. Tubers take a higher level of dedication to ride daily. (plus, tuber owners need money, parts, beer etc)

Good luck with your next purchase whatever it is.

I had a similar experience going from Progressive to Geico. Don't always believe the Progressive hype.
