While I am not ready today, in the near future I am looking for a Uly, Most that Ive seen have been a distance away from me so I figure a fly and ride will be involved. How do you guys deal with bringing your helmet? I cant think checking it would be a good Idea, Ive had enough luggage destroyed over the years. Will they allow it as carry on? Any other suggestions for bringing gear, etc? Thanks for your Help! | ||

You could ask the dealer to throw in a helmet.....you're already paying thousands for a bike. -Nick- | ||

just bring limited gear in a collapsible bag for a carry on and wear what you can. wore boots/jacket on the plane. bumpus gave a little perk to sweeten the deal for me so i had ample storage for the ride home. thanks again tom and jeremy. | ||

+ 1 asking dealer to throw in helmet. Try to arrange this as part of the deal up front. I agree with not checking a helmet. Had second thoughts about buying future helmets at bike shows after watching a couple vendors set up at our local show ("it only bounced a couple times when I dropped it, should be ok..."). I've never had an issue with helmet as carry on item. I usually wear my zip up armoured boots (easy on n off for security checkpoint), tuck my gloves in my helmet, and carry my helmet on in a backpack or the helmet bag. Good luck! BeLinda. | ||

I think it'd be cool to just get on the plane wearing ATGATT. I'm sure you'd get some "interesting" looks from the passengers and flight attendants.  | ||

ATGATT means every ride- including ones you fly to. The simple solution is boxing up your gear and shipping it to the dealer. Your helmet, jacket, pants, gloves, and boots should ship for under $50- which is a very small expenditure for your safety. Your body and brain are the hardest parts to replace when things go bad- it's never a good idea to skimp on safety. Ship your gear and protect yourself as much as possible- every time. | ||

No matter what you do with the rest of your gear, I personally would keep the helmet on me at all times. Don't need the monkeys at UPS or the airliner carry on tossing it around. | ||

Froggy, I was thinking the same thing, but didnt know if the airlines would allow it as carry on, because I dont think it would meet the actual carry on dimensions, and there is no way I would want them to say at the last minute, uh you have to check this. Never even thought about asking the dealer to throw one in, but did think about just getting one there, and using it as a spare when I got home. Again, Thanks! | ||

The monkeys at UPS are how new helmets get delivered to dealers. If you order a new helmet online it's going to get shipped to your home, and every helmet made overseas (the vast majority of manufacturers) ship them around the world. Packaged properly, a shipped helmet could be safer than one carried by hand. Worst case scenario- if something does happen and you insured it, you end up with a brand new helmet. | ||

When I did this in...2005 I believe it was, I wore the jacket and boots and carried helmet and gloves in a small duffle with me. The bag was just big enough that I could get it zipped over the helmet, but small enough to bungee to the seat behind me for the trip home (and obviously, small enough to carry on the plane). No hassles anywhere. | ||

Gear was easy. Packed it all in a collapsible duffle. Wore the boots, and that was my carry on bag. I was on a little commuter jet, so that helmet bag would not fit in the overhead, so I just handed it to the baggage handler at the tarmac and told him there is a motorcycle helmet in there and that if he could be gentle I would appreciate it. I think I had it wrapped in the jacket as well. On a bigger plane, it probably could have gone in the overhead. Tools were the bigger problem, really couldn't bring any carry on, so it was a roll of the dice to get home. As it turned out, Alex had all the tools I ended up needing, so just break down near a friend on the way home.  | ||

I've done this 3 times now. What I've done is packed everything in a big enough (but not too big) box that I can basically wrap my helmet in all my gear. Cradle it in my Motoport pants. Wrap jacket around helmet, and stuff everything else around the sides. If my helmet gets damaged like this, there are bigger problems. Never had a problem. | ||

I ship the gear, carry the helmet, wear the boots. No problem. Carrying the helmet starts a lot of conversations and lots of TSA folks ride. They run me right through. LJM |
