I was browsing craigslist and found a bike that looked like a smoking deal. Its a a 2006 12ss 2900 miles with saddle bags helmet and jacket for 3700. I called a chated with the guy he seemed nice and just needs the money for a house. However it has a salvage title and had been repaired by the owner prior to him. He bought it with 800 miles and hasnt had any trouble with it. It has a dent under one of the frame pucks. The handle bars and brake lever were replaced. He said he had it to a dealer when he bought it and they said it all looked good. The only thing was a slightly skewed rear sub frame. So what do you guys think of a situation like this? Would you run for the hills? How hard is it to get banks to borrow on something with a salvage title? How about insurance? Thanks. Tony | ||

Salvage title dramatically kills the value. I wouldn't touch it over $3k. That said, it probably is fine and would be a good bike. | ||

Rex, I can't give you any advise on the insurance or loan with a salvage title, but I can tell you that I laid my 12s down and ended up with a moon crater where my puck was. Had to replace brake levers and some cosmetics and threw some carbon fiber frame guards on vise frame pucks since the frame puck wouldn't fully cover the dent. I've had no ill effects except a loss of gasoline capacity. I did not report the damage to my insurance since there was no way to pull or repair the dent. Just my 2 cents. | ||

I won't touch a salvage unless I want it for parts or for the track, too many problems trying to put it on the road in New York. If I was a bank, I would give you a 0.0000 percent chance of borrowing money against something that I probably couldn't reclaim if you defaulted. | ||

You will likely not get a loan, and only get liability insurance. $3700 is not super cheap for a 2006....it's good, not great if it were not salvaged. Salvage title, not a good deal. | ||

I just bought my basically mint 06 XB12Ss on here for $4300. There are some good deals to be had right now. When I talked to my bank about a salvage title on a car they would not loan on them. That being said if you could talk him down to 3k or so and had cash it should be a good deal. Depends on your states standards. | ||

Adding to your debt load for a bike that has no value is a bad idea. If you had cash might be a diff story. Let them know to call you when price comes down to x(name your own price, you determine the value). Wait a couple months, no one else will touch it, the price will come down and you'll get a call. | ||

When I was first searching for a Buell I found a good deal on a 2005 XB9SX with low miles and a salvage title. The bike had been down on both sides! It also had damage under the frame pucks, plus other typical damage. I ended up not buying it, however my friend did buy it. He never had any issues with the bike, it ran and rode great. If the guy is being honest and he bought it already damaged and hasn't had any problems than its probably fine since any issues would've likely shown up by now. No guarantees though of course. | ||

If you are going under 3000 bucks a signature loan may be an option. Then you don't need full coverage. | ||

like ourdee said, if credit is good enuff for that type loan or if you have a card to do it with? or have a way to do it with cash.you can always swap in a used clean frame in the future and then be clear title and can get full coverage.you should browbeat him on the S title and work the price down and far as you can. good luck | ||

and honestly, i'd take a high mileage xb for cheaper than a slightly beat up one with s title. search CL in other cities in warmer climates as well, you can find good deals too. |
