Bads - It sounds much more like the Drummer than the first clip. I was hoping for a run through the gears though. I guess that's kind of hard to get. Kevin - What? Half a day today? |

Sound awesome but your right a run thru the gears would be even nicer...maybe on a dyno? I guess it would be a little hard to record otherwise. |

I knew Impulse/Bads were having a go at getting a sound clip and that was a good thing 'cause I had a go too last weekend and it turned to $#i+ ! I had 3 attempts with a laptop in a backpack with a mic clipped on and tried to do a run through the gears, the 1st and most easily fixed problem was keeping the front wheel down from a standing start, the 2nd and more serious problem was that a Drummer (or any non-stock pipe) has a huge dynamic range meaning it is soft at idle or small loads and is loud out WOT making it difficult to record the whole range of sound without using a compressor which I don't have (got one in the desktop though). The 3rd and most serious problem is that it doesn't take long to get to 100mph and then all the microphone picks up is severe 100mph wind noises and buffeting... I got some more ideas for an on-the-run recording including different mics/wind filter, perhaps a piezo type mic, or maybe put the computer on the ground and do a drive-by. What I did get was promising enough for me to have another go. I think a stereo recording of a drive-by going from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd and then rolling off the throttle (gotta hear that rolling off sound) using a compressor during the recording rather than on the resultant recorded sound might be the way to go... back to the drawing board for me...

Opto is correct the dynamic range (the point from the quietest sound to the loudest sound) is huge for this file. In order to get it right I had to compress the sound (not the file)and then normalize the soundfile. i.e. I made the loudest sounds a little quieter and then brought everything up to that level. With more time and editing I can continue to clean it up and make it sound better on a computer, but as I told Bads1 yesterday a mic is just a 1D version of an ear, and it takes a lot of work to get something coming out of a speaker to sound like it does in real life. When I go home again tonight and adjust the levels again and see if I can squash it down so that the levels are more consistant. JT |

There is no shame in that. As long as he actually does flush. JT |
