If you follow this site you will see that I have been taking apart my engine to replace a possible bad crank and bearing. To my surprise I don't see any signs of wear or damage to the crank and or parts around it. Before I completely split the case what is something I should be seeing or doing to make sure it’s the crank? Any help would be great |

Go to a shop and ask it first to an older person (because they have more experience and give mostly a honest answer!) But you,re this far! ,so go for it and split the case look ,measure and if you can find it let the shop look to it. and when you go assemble the engine put new bearings in for sure! And show us some good pictures when you have split it ! |

I guess the $400 question is how to tell if the rod bearings and/or crank pin are boogered, other than pressing apart the two halves of the crank so you can eye-ball them. I don't have a clue. Edit- a quick google found this: http://books.google.com/books?id=Q-x8aLxuXhoC&pg=PA209&lpg=PA209&dq=harley+crank+pin+inspection&source=bl&ots=nHuD3_gptC&sig=lfUAb0I1Ucn2qqba-8E-MKxpkQY&hl=en&ei=r0O-S564FsP38Aay2tHvCA&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=4&ved=0CA4Q6AEwAw#v=onepage&q=harley%20crank%20pin%20inspection&f=false Step 9 tells how to inspect the crankpin. The book appears to be written about old Harley engines, but it gives you an idea of how to check. (Message edited by hughlysses on April 08, 2010) |

I'm in the process of rebuilding my engine. I had a loud knocking noise. Remove the engine and found one of the rod had too much play. You cannot replace the bearings or rod separately. Its all one complete asnbly. Its around $500. I just split the case open tonight. Will keep you posted. |
