Hey gang, Question for you. I am goin to need to smooth out the rear pulley (04 pulley) on my XB. Seems after I low sided at the track I scrapped up the pulley a bit. It has started to fray my belt and Im concerned that if I dont address it soon the belt will break. Im thinking of just busting out my dremmel or getting some sand paper and smoothing it out | ||

Even though you have an 04 I'd still get a new belt. Even though the new belts are tougher, they're not bullet-proof. Being frayed = being weaker. Just my .02 | ||

It is just a little fraying on the outside. I will pick one up as a backup. Misato, what did you use to polish it? Im not looking to polish the pulley, just smooth out the roughness on the teeth to stop the wear on the belt A friend thru here was nice enough to help me out with an 03 pulley system and belt, so I still have that as a backup also. | ||

I still have that as a backup also. Sounds to me you're good to go. The first one that I broke, did it at one of the worst times. If ya wanna make me feel better  put the new one on when you get it and keep the frayed one for a spare  | ||

Not sure about the XB's, but the tuber pulleys have chrome plating on the teeth to reduce friction on the belt. If the XB's have the same plating, you may not want to sand it off. | ||

The XBs have hard chrome plating. Gouges or large chrome chips with sharp edges can damage the belt. But if you're talking about deburring the scraped edges and the chrome is otherwise in good shape, you're probably OK. A worn belt can have a fuzzy edge cord and still be OK but keep an eye on its condition. | ||

My belt is showing wear on the outside edge after 15K, but it's getting a new belt along with all the other 'routine' maintenance before it's ridden again...and I'll have the old belt as a spare in case I pull a Glitch.  Aside from being careful with it, I'm sure my lack of snap-throttle wheelies and leaving the belt guards on contributes to my belt's good shape. I tend more towards roll-ons when I feel like a rush, which I'm sure is much nicer to the belt. edited by darthane on April 16, 2004 | ||

Have the 03 belts changed? I noticed the part numbers have changed. before it's ridden again I ride mine every day... | ||

The new part number is for a new belt (still made by Gates). Anon wrote about it in a post some time ago indicating it is stronger and more durable. But any mishandling/twisting will still screw it up. So, it's better, but still not an '04 Goodyear belt. Mike. | ||
