From monitoring this Badweb for the last 6 months I've become aware of the possible problems that can arise with the XBs. At the moment I have the opportunity to purchase an 02 XB9R from private sale, racekit with 7000km (~4250miles) for $13,500AUS (~$9,825US), or a new XB9R 03 model, no racekit but with two year warranty on road costs included for $15,995AUS (~$11,640US).

Question is, am i better off trying to find the extra $$$ to buy new, or is used the way to go knowing i might not have any trouble at all? Should i expect to pay less for a used firebolt than whats on offer here? Are there any differences between the 02, 03 and 04 for that matter (apart from the belts on the 04's)?

Opinions, advice, information greatly appreciated.

There are no '02's. The "02's" are early release 03's. Not knowing the sales situation all that well for the Land Of Oz its difficult for me to suggest anything.

That price for the used one would be high here in the states. Prices seem to be hovering around $6000 - 7500US used here.

also the 03's do not have a 2 year warranty here in the states. it maybe different in OZ.

from what your saying the price of new bikes are there. I'd offer around $8500US, whatever that equivalent is in aussie money.

the problems with the xb's has been minimal, except for a few isolated incendents the reliabilty has been great.

I'd buy used.

That price does seem a little high but I'm comparing that to the sales on used XBs here in the States. I think the new '04 model is worth it with the extra warranty and the upgrades from the '03 models. You would spend the difference on the '03 putting the extra warranty and upgrades on it that you get with the '04. I guess it just depends on what you're willing to spend.

I think Buellgator makes a valid point about the '04. Here in the states, the 03 has only a 1-year warranty, standard. I wonder if your dealer is going to slap you with a "hidden" cost for the extra year when you sign on the dotted line? Then again, it could be standard 2-years because of your laws, or something??

Another reason to consider an '04 is the new belt which is much more durable and "failsafe" than the '03. And, the '04 already has mirrors you can actually use and the wheel bearings and kickstand are upgraded.

Bottom line is, the XB's are reliable so regardless of your choice, you'll be happy you picked an XB.
Mike.

Have you looked at importing one from the states?

look at what the new prices are and compare for the guy. prices are higher in austrailia, and the 2 year he's been told is on an 03 not an 04 model. so I am not sure if he is talkin 04.

on the used one comparing the price difference between the countries,
it like the guy is asking about $7500 for the used one so if he can get it for what would be considered $6500 in the usa whats so high about that.

maybe I am missing something here

Thanks for the fast responses... this site ROCKS and is half the reason i for me wanting a Buell.

The used bike I'm looking at is 02 manufactured and the guy bought it as soon as they were released (in 03?). I was thinking $8500US equivelent like Bubba suggested was fair and reasonable so might make that my offer.

The 03 model i was talking about is run out at that price and was told over the phone it came with 2 year warranty. Will clarify with the dealer this afternoon when i test ride the 9S model. The 04s are more expensive now at around $17200AUS (~$12500US) on the road, no race kit.

I'll see how i like the Lightning. I might have to save for a while to get an 04 if thats the case as there is only one new 03 XB9R left at the cheaper price.

Thanks guys.
