I was looking through the archive and stumbled upon this site that recommends and "run it hard from the start" approach to the break in of new engines, has anyone done further research on the proper way to break and engine in???? |

I read the site and it sounds like it could possibly be almost as good as he claims. I'd like to try it out on a cheaper engine first though, before I smoke my baby. Maybe I'll buy a lawn mower or something. Then again, if I did it on a lawn mower I'd never be able to tell if it made any difference. I'll just wait till someone else tries it out. |

I'll be getting a Nallin 88" kit at some point and I'll ask if they'll still warranty the engine (I think they have a warranty...) if I break it in that way. If they will, I'll try it and write about it... Of course, I'll not know if I have a better engine than if I had taken it easy... But it seems to make sense to me. |

Josh, Welcome to the board. I drove mine @50mph for 50 miles, then started driving it like I stole it. Seams to be working great for me (28522 miles since April 11th 03. Ski |

There used to be an old school saying -"break it in the way you want it to run". Ive never been totally comfortable with it but the guy on the site sounds convinced. Im curious if the factory break in is for inexperienced riders,i.e.get used to the bike. |

When I first bought my 9r, one of the guys in the service dept. told me to break it in the way I would be riding it. I pretty much took his word and the bike runs good. |

I've always believed if you are going to run it hard, break it in hard. My XB is my 17th bike and I haven't had a failure yet... Could be dumb luck. I'll keep you posted. |

I asked some more of the guys at work today ( I work for a HD dealer ) and got yet even more varied answers, one thing for sure was to change the oil a lot more frequently than at the 1k mark because of all of the new crud formed during the break in. I also had one of my most trusted techs say to just be sensible, not to rail on it but ride the thing and don't stay at a set rpm for long periods of time....I'll post more as I get more replies....thanks for all the input!!! |

Donald,I have a friend that has a NALLINIZED 88 motor,I have the NALLINIZED 1250 kit.We both took it easy on our breakins,we both seemed to use oil as the rings didnt seem to seat.It could have been a coincidence, but we both reringed our motors, broke the in the mototuneusa method, and all is well.I have shared that article with about a dozed new bike owners, all of them broke their engines in like he recomended and all of their bikes are running great with no oil loss or consumption. |

I have followed the mototune breakin proceedure on street and drag race engines for about 5 years now...I am a true believer!! Never a motor failure. The race motors are run at constant full throttle 1/4 mile blasts to the tune of approx. 2-300 passes per season at 7000+ rpms and when they get refreshed (honed & reringed) in the off season the parts definately look in better shape than when I used the Factory Mantra in the past... |
