Can someone explain how to remove the seat on an xb12? I have no clue what model of xb it is being as I don't ride it let alone a motorcycle, anymore anyways. I've been fixing and cleaning it up as a sort of welcome home present for my boy. He had a little wipe out 4 or 5 months ago and scraped up his mirror and headers as well as those rubber things that protect the frame. I got the bumper and new controls and stuff figured out but Im going to need his help with taking the headers off since the rear head is up and inbetween the frame and I know nothing about dropping a Buell engine. But back to the question. I went out to start it up and let it run some and the starter would engage then disengage then engage again and kept doing that. I thought this could be from loose terminals. Now I know you have to use the key to unluck the seat which is what I did but when I go to slide it back and up something stops it from going back all the way. Is there like some little trick to get it off or if the terminals are loose, could they be what is keeping the seat from coming off? I'm retarded as all hell when it comes to modern motorcycles, working on this is a bit different than my old 74 Yamaha DT400 I wrapped around a lightpole. Thanks in advance. |

You need to figure out which XB12 it is, all of them open different. The R models (Firebolt) are the most complicated, so I will show you a picture. For the Firebolt, you will need a Torx 27 size screwdriver. If you have one, proceed to step 3, if you do not have one, follow these instructions to get the mini tool kit out from the bike. Step 1 - Take your ignition key, and use it in the lock on the left side of the bike as pictured. This lock will release the rear pillion seat/cover. Step 2 - Remove the seat/cover, you will find a small black or blue pouch tucked inside the storage compartment. Inside the tool pouch is a L shaped piece of metal with a Torx 27 bit on each end. Step 3 - Peel back the rear corners of the seat, you will see a Torx screw on each of these two corners. Use the T27 tool to remove these screws. The seat should slide back a little and come off.
For Lightning models, it is the same as Step one above. Simply locate the key hole on the left side, insert and the key will release. For Ulysses models, the lock is located in the rear of the bike below the tail light. |

If it's a Lightning, it should come up just fine after turning the key to release; pull it to the rear of the bike a little bit, and the seat will come free. |

Thanks. I dug up the registration and it's registered as a XB12SCG, if that helps, and it has no pillion cover. I can hear the lock unlock when I turn the key it is just when I proceed to slide the seat back something stops it from going all the way back. Sorry if I made it unclear. |

Great, so being a Lightning SCG it should just slide right off when you twist the key. Once you slide it as far back as it goes, it should pop right off, try pulling up. |

I tried. Relentlessly but to no avail. I looked at pictures of these seats and on my end it seems that it isn't sliding back enough so the hooks are clear of the pegs. |

I have an SCG and the first time I tried to remove the seat I was about ready to ride back to the dealer for them to do it. However, it will come off. It is an odd combination of an up and back movement. Don't be afraid to yank back and up fairly hard. You might also want someone to turn the key while you pull just to make sure its released. |

My '03 seat takes a bit of grunt to get off but now that I know the trick...it isn't bad. Unlock with the key, grab the back of the seat firmly, and yank up and back. You can't break anything and once you do it...you will be good to go. |

Get your fingers under the back of the seat as you turn the key so that you can pull it up out of the latch. Then it will slide back. If it hasn't been on and off much you may have to pull up hard. Sounds like you turn the key it unlatches, letting go of the key is letting it re-latch because the latch bar is not disengaging with the latch mechanism. |

It doesn't latch back unless I press on the seat, then I'll hear a click. To make sure that I wasn't trying to remove a locked seat I had the old lady hold the key in the unlock position and tried that until she the mouth that runs like water on a ducks ass started about it being to cold to do this. Is there some way I can drop that plastic thing that I assume is what contains the battery and see if something is blocking the seat from sliding all the way back? I would much rather not have to have it towed to the dealer if I don't have to but it needs an oil change so I may just. |

Mine is fairly hard to remove also. After you hear the "click" from turning the key, go to the very back of the seat just above tail light. Pry your fingers in there pull up slightly until there is half inch or so of gap, then with other hand bang the seat aft towards rear tire on step up portion of seat.(where passenger part starts)keep hitting aft then it will 'pop' right off when the hooks are clear of the pins. |

Kinda like said above if you dont lift the back up enough the "key latch" will not stay clear enough to let sidehooks go back far enough to get clear of the pins. You cant get "battery tray out without seat off any way. at least without maybe totally destroying it and other things. hope this helps good luck! |

The first time I tried to get the seat off the wife's scg it finally yanked up and I smacked my Uly handlebar with the back of my hand. Then I almost broke my other hand pounding the seat down to get it to latch again! BTW, my Uly seat is difficult to latch also. |

it might be that the latch is stuck with corrosion. try lifting then back of the seat up and spraying some fluid down there such as wd 40 or similar. the latch is only a couple of inches in from the back of the seat being an scg it has quite a 'scoop' in the seat where the rider sits. try giving that a thump toward the back of the bike with your hand. i had to do that when my scg was new. Yep, lift hard and smack the seat with your other hand driving it towards the back, use a torque type hit, not a slap. It will come up just before you think the plastic seat pan is going to break. They really do get easier after you figure out just how hard you need to hit it the first time. I bought a new one for my Uly and thought it would never latch, damn near had to jump my entire 235 pounds of mass on it ten times. After it latched the first couple of times it was easy to do. |
