I can't find the post awhile back where someone posted the part numbers for the longer fuel vent line and cap I would need to eliminate the California charcoal can. Can one of you guys who have a parts manual post that please? Shhhh, don't tell the EPA. Thanks |

Blackm2Posted on Thursday, February 18, 2010 Shhhh, don't tell the EPA. you already have.... Other than doesn't look good, the canister does a lot more good than bad. P.S. "our" C.A.R.B is way worse than the E.P.A. Both of which have out lived their intended usefulness... (Message edited by TEEPS on February 18, 2010) |

what does that canister do? |

It catches fuel if overfilled, and vapors that escape into the atmosphere. And yes Tom it's ugly AND does good, however when I have to pull the vapor recovery boot back on the nozzle when I fill it, and every piece of crap that comes across the border is spewing white smoke, and... I could go on and on. It is just not that important on THIS bike to make a difference. Sorry didn't mean to turn this into an environmental thread. |

PM me if you want to sell your canister and lines and such. I'll get back to you on the part numbers for the 49 state stuff. The can connects to your fuel vent line and throttle body and prevents the gas vapors from escaping into the atmosphere. |

Thanks Frank. I want to hold on to the can just in case they do pass some bs smog law for bikes. |

I recently pulled the evap can off because I don't like the look of it but I'm going to put it back on since now it drips gasoline and stinks everything up. I'll live with the can for the piece of mind that I'm not going to blow my self up in the garage. I have even seen where people with the 49 state bikes add them to their bike for the same reasons. Has anyone else here taken off and put back on or just added the evap can to their bike because they don't like the stink? |

Ah, the old, "everyone else but not me" argument. The canister provides a significant level of protection from VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds). Remember that gasoline, versus diesel, has an extremely high volatility and contributes much to evaporative pollution. Pollution levels have gotten SIGNIFICANTLY better since the inception of emission controls. Ask anyone who was around in an urban area during the 60's - 70's. Also, there are ZERO negative affects on power OR economy. Soap box mode on: Take a lesson in both discipline and personal responsibility here. We've all seen the idiotic behavior of people simply because they didn't learn that lesson. Soap box mode off: |

Mine's off and I have had no issues. I re-routed the hose between the engine and swingarm and nothing comes out of it unless I overfill the gas tank right before parking the bike... Did the crankcase breather mod too. |

Actually, because the vapors get burned instead of wasted in the atmosphere, you technically do raise the fuel economy, despite it being almost unmeasurable I got 49 state bikes, the old lady I live with has a more sensitive nose than me, and can smell a faint gas odor after I get home. My intent was to do it just to shut her up, but since it helps reduce harmful emissions, I don't see why I shouldn't do it. |

Well I guess this could turn into another environmental argument. Major pollution in the 60's and 70's came from little to no restrictions in air quality for vehicles or industry. Lead and other goodies in the fuel compounded the problem. Now with refinement improvements and stricter air quality sure it has improved, but there are sooooo many people in California now that it really makes no difference. Have you been to Riverside, CA on normal day? I go way above and beyond, probably more than the average person to help the environment, so I harbor no guilt. And I'm doing it purely for aesthetics, I know there is no performance improvement. If it leaks too much fuel, then I'll put it back on. |

Froggy - you are ABSOLUTELY correct! You do GAIN performance with the canister. There you go - two options a) get better performance AND take personal responsibility. b) you can go for the "bling" and feel everybody else should solve your problem. Question - which one makes you a "squid"! To quote a profile: "Treat others as you want to be treated" Sorry - I admit, I have a very dry sense of humor... Treating others as you want to be treated, or "bling" for that matter, has zero to do with taking a charcoal can off of a bike. Making comments in regards to calling someone a squid, when: a) you don't know me b) you haven't ridden with me isn't having a dry sense of humor, it's being an a-hole. Now if it makes you feel any better, I have a 15 year old dog who has really foul smelling flatulence, and since methane is also apparently a big problem for air pollution, I will rig that can to his sphincter and join the cause. |

I took off my cannister, ugly POS. Does not leak fuel, no smell in garage. Wait My folks have many horses, maybe they can use them. Got to save the planet you know. That vapor from cycles is destroying the planet....not |

Since methane is made directly from the carbon that the animal ate which was grown from a plant, it goes right back into the carbon cycle to be consumed right back into the plant. Ergo, carbon cycle. So that methane is natural energy from the sun and plants! Problem with petrol is that it's made from carbon that's been encased in the Earth for 200+ million years, hence adding carbon into a completely different ecosystem. I'm sorry, just laughing at the irony of it all... and btw, I never called anyone a squid. You never get to choose what happens to you in life; you only get to choose how you react to it. But as long as all the voices in my head keep laughing about it, I still think it's funny! |

You should re-read your facts on the carbon cycle. Fossil fuels and the carbon produced by the burning of those fuels, are part of the carbon cycle as well so I fail to see what you are trying to differentiate here. In any case, what started as a very simple question on this motorcycle forum has once again turned into a showcase for somebodies ecological, social, political,..... whatever agenda. Although entertaining at times, it has no place in this section of Badweb. (Message edited by blackm2 on February 19, 2010) |

LOL! The reason I question the logic of someone spending money to remove emission equipment that will cost them more money and performance is because there are VERY ACTIVE groups that are trying to make you SMOG CHECK YOUR MOTORCYCLES! I had to write to my local paper and California State legislature to help overturn a plan to require EVERY MOTORCYCLE to be Smog checked. And guess how the legislation was worded - as a "noise abatement" law. Fortunately, it was not passed. But imagine what the newspaper spin folks could do with the headline - "Motorcyclists removing emission controls for reduced performance and more money". No one's going to stop you from doing it, but I would encourage everyone to think about why they are doing it... because we are a VERY small demographic and it is important to take personal accountability to prevent the masses from taxing our chosen method of transportation. Never underestimate the power of ignorant people in large groups. BTW, you are correct that petrol goes through the carbon cycle as well, the difference is that it will ADD carbon that was removed 200 million years ago and put it into the existing one. Methane from food sources, however, is carbon that comes from the EXISTING ecosystem and hence there is no net gain of carbon. That's the beauty of bio-fuels, but we'll leave that for a different topic. The basic question is since carbon canisters are so beneficial (though I admit, not pretty), why spend time and money removing them? |

The 1125 models have the can located under the seat out of sight. If looks are an issue, how about relocating it there? |

Sloppy, I removed mine because doing the breather crankcase mod was more important, and I needed the space to put my setup there... Since when does the charcoal canister impact performance? If it did, ppl outside of California would buy them and put them on their bike. It's got virtually no impact on performance... It cost me about $0.00 to remove mine... not sure why you think it costs money to remove it. Before: After:

Makes no sense whatsoever to remove. Doesn't improve much to put in that other stuff. I travel with my xb12ss in the toyhauler motorhome quite a bit. IF I took off the evap it will stink of gas. Logic of this escapes me, sorry. |
