A friend sent me this article on the correct method for breaking in a new motorcycle engine. Do you mechanic types agree/disagree? http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm |

These instructions are the same as the way we used to break in freshly bored MX bikes. It worked very well on those bikes. However they were all 2 strokes back then. Not sure if it would work the same way on a 4 stroke. The theory makes sense though. JR |

I would like to hear what others say about this!!! Just bought a new xb and have 80 miles on it, just curious to the logic behind an "easy" break in. |

IMHO the best advice is Change your oil @ 50 miles & 2-3 times before the manual says. Get the crud out early. Vary rpm's, accelerate/ decelerate to break in rings properly. No steady state cruising for 500 miles. Just to be arbitrary. Don't rev the crap out of the motor, without a load. There is no presure on the rings to seal them, you'll just polish the rings & bore to a leaky state, and might even break something, as inertial effect can let you rev over red line. Don't Lug the motor. That beats on the bearings, without any advantage to the rest of the motor break in or no. Don't be stupid & wheelie into the side of a car. ( break in advice for the rider ) I might be wrong. YMMV edited by aesquire on April 09, 2004 |
