I am wanting a GPS I would like a motorcycle specific unit. I am looking at the Garmin Zumo 550, but it is so expensive compared to the TomTom Rider 2nd edition. I found the TomTom on ebay for $250 and the cheapest I can find the Zumo is over $400. Is almost double the extra cost really worth it?

While I really like Garmin GPS's and have them for the car, bike, and plane they're really proud of their stuff! I was going to try the Tom Tom myself because its such a good buy. Or go to Abe's of Maine and buy a factory refurbished one. thats what I did with my 396 aircraft portable.

The BIGGEST problem with Tomtom is their 50 waypoint route limit. Many of our twisty routes have 150+ waypoints.

Navigon showed promise with their units, but canceled their North American distribution.

My Garmin Streetpilot 2820(which I paid $200 for brand new last year)has a 1000 waypoint route limit.

I've tried a LOT of GPS brands out there. Garmin is the way to go.

The only problem with the 2820, it NEEDs to be hardwired to the bike. There is no internal battery. And it has no internal speaker. But it's waterproof, accurate(even more so with a cheap external antenna), and relatively fast.

This one is going cheap, because no power cord.

The standard automotive power cord has the external speaker attached to it. But not needed for the motorcycle kit, which is still available on Amazon and other sites.

Add a rammount base, and your set to go. Use either bluetooth, or standard ear phone jack on the unit for audio.

Zumo - I believe in the 450 - which can be had used in good shape for pretty reasonable. The Garmin user community is enormous and you can get hundreds of routes on their user site.

It will play 2Gb chips - so you can easily plug in earphones or speakers.

It's fully waterproof so rain and mud are not an issue... just hose it off.

Plug it in with a USB cord and updates are easy.

I like it because the touch-screen works well with a gloved hand - INCLUDING spelling. You can also just start using it without reading the instructions - it's that intuitive.
