Hello guys, I am new here and I have a question. I rode a Buell a few years ago and fell in love with it. Since then I've been riding an 85 Kawasaki and an 87 Yamaha dirtbike but have been keeping an eye on Buells for when I can upgrade. I just heard about Buell closing a few days ago (a bit behind the times I suppose) so I decided to take the plunge and pick one up before they're all gone. The prices are pretty good for some of the new models around where I live, but I am also looking at used bikes on the cheap. So here's my question(s): I have come across a 2004 XB12S that has "been laid down once on the right side" for 3 grand. I am waiting to see pictures but maybe you guys can help me decide before I waste any time. It has 10k on it and one owner. Does anyone know how well these bikes take being dropped? Are they cheap enough to repair minor stuff that comes with taking a vertical turn for the worse? Anything in particular I should look for once I get pictures and go to look at it? Or should I just forget it now and get a newer one? p.s. If I do get a new one, apparently my bank and several others I have looked at are staying away from motorcycle loans because of the economy. Does anybody know of a good bank or credit union or whatever that will still finance a motorcycle in these "horrible" economic times? Thanks a lot and I look forward to getting a Buell eventually and riding with some of you guys! -Nick |

04's are worth about $3k without being dropped. It depends on the drop, everything is designed to break off easy to prevent major damage, and can be repaired cheap. Only exception is the frame, if it didn't have frame pucks on during the "drop", there is a good chance the frame is dented. |

nick, the first thing i would find out is if it had been classified as a totaled bike. when i wrecked the scg, the front was messed up(very fixable) but because of the scratch on the tank, they totaled it out. now in florida if the bike was totaled and i had bought it back and fixed it. my insurance company would not reinsure it. so needless to say, i didn't keep it. depending on how far your willing to travel, you might be able to find a better deal on a new one with a warranty. i would check to see if it was classified as totaled first then check with your insurance company and your state laws. i should have never turned it in but hind sight is twenty twenty. hope you get one cause they are great bikes and welcome to the badness. |

Short answer is no, not worth it. |

Here's the deal... the tank (if dented) is going to be something like $1K to replace. Use that as a bargaining point. Personally, if it was only laid down (low-sided) - it can be run for years without worrying. Like the others said, $3K is steep. The year and the model are great when you get one KEEP it. |

I would keep looking, there are plenty of Buells still available at reasonable prices that have not been wrecked or dropped. You might find it easier to work with the banks on a newer model, especially on a new one. Good luck on your search. |

Hey guys thanks for the responses! Based on what you've said I think I will keep looking. If it is worth 3k un-dropped than I don't want to bother with this one. Even if it is fixable I'm not sure I would have the expertise required to replace the tank/frame thing anyway. I'm not much of a mechanic, last time I bought a cheap bike that needed major help it sat in the garage in pieces for 2 years. No worries, there are plenty better ones around. Thanks a bunch for the help! I'll post pictures when I land on the right bike. -Nick |

Hi again, The seller sent me a few pictures. Hopefully I posted them correctly... pic1 pic2 pic3 pic4 Looks like the frame pucks helped the damage a bit, but I can't tell what it looks like underneath the puck. The frame is smooth underneath the pucks, right? |

Some sins? That right puck is covering a crater. The left side puck is how it should look. Pass. |

Pass on it. But give the guy my number and tell him I'll give him $1,250.00 cash for it. Jim |

I agree with everything these guys said. That right puck is hiding a pretty sizable dent that you don't want to mess with. Like Froggy said, the left side is what it should look like. For what it's worth, I just bought a '09 XB12XT at the dealer and financed through Harley finance. They are pretty good about it for obvious reasons. That's the way I'd go if your own bank/CU won't do it. Good luck! |

damn, this is a sad reminder of the current state of buells. my first buell, and 03XB9S, was laid down on the left side, simply fell over, with minimal damage and it was a steal at 3500. this is not a bad bike at all but that poor guy will NEVER get 3000 for it. its sad if youre sellin, but great if youre buyin!!! you can find a much better bike for 3000, keep shopping |

Yeah, but I agree with Jim. I'll give him $1250 for it right now and make a track bike out of it. |

That's definitely a damaged area, you can see the dent under the puck. Almost looks like the puck was put on after the dent and then scuffed to make it look like it was there. And what is the dent from? Probably need a new upper triple clamp and bar since both those could be bent. I agree, offer around $1200 if it really runs and never really intend on putting it on the road. |

Ok, definite pass on this bike. Thanks guys for checking it out and helping me decide. I've found an 07 STT with 375 miles on it. Picking it up on Saturday. Too bad for me though since it's snowing like crazy where I live. Best I'll be able to do is take a bunch of pictures and sit on it. And if you guys are interested in picking the other one up for a track/parts bike, sorry I wasn't clear about this earlier but it is for sale at Grand Rapids HD in Michigan. Here is their listing: http://www.grandrapidsharley.com/new_vehicle_detai l.asp?sid=04331629X1K7K2010J6I15I06JPMQ2899R0&veh= 8561&pov=1511699 thanks again and I'll post pictures on Saturday -Nick |

I figured you bought it in Toledo. Did you happen to see or ask about the other STT they have? Just wondering on the price they are asking. I am trying to save some money to buy one and I keep missing out on the good deals. Congratulations on your new bike! |

I did look at the other stt they had. Brand new with a warranty but they wanted 7600 out the door. They also had an 1125r and if you paid full price (12 or 13 grand plus fees I believe) for that you get the new stt for a dollar. Too bad I only had enough money for one bike! I ended up paying 6300 out the door for mine. They wouldn't budge on the price as they were selling it for much less than they paid for it. I think it was still a good deal and the engine sound alone is worth the money and then some! The dealership was great, too. I would recommend them. I dealt with Andy and he was very helpful throughout the whole process. I also got the walk through and while they didn't have too much Buell stuff in stock, their people were nice and seemed to know their stuff pretty well. I also talked to the service guy and he gave me a whole bunch of useful info about caring for the bike. |
