2008 XB12R - 800 miles. I got 64 miles on my last fill up before the light came on (26 MPG!) I know that that it should improve with more milage, but that seems VERY low. I'm getting the clutch cable repaired at the dealer from the recall and I want to see if I should have the ecm reflashed while they're at it. Do any of the new flashes from the dealer help? I've seen a couple of posts but no one has anything overly positive to say after. These were a few months old though. I have an early production 08? How can I tell if my ECMspy works with it? I've read that it will probably read but several numbers are messed up. Where should I be looking? I heard the new reflashes completely get rid of ecmspy functionality. I'd rather not loose that tuning ability. I plan on getting aftermarket exhaust. I know it shouldnt be an issue unless I go with K&N and the breather reroute. |

IMO get the reflash. 08+ users are just kind of screwed with tuning their bikes. EBR should be making available a programmable ECM, it will probably cost an arm and a leg though, but I'm sure I'll get one. Ive gotten the reflashes, cant really say if they improved the MPG. I average low to mid 30's on my 08, with 6K on the clock. 26 MPG is very, VERY low, even for an unbroken in bike with 800 miles. Don't know what to say about that. |

26 mpg seems very low. I have an 09 XB12Scg and I was averaging 36-40 mpg during the break-in period. -Nick- |

26? Yikes! I get upper 40's to lower 50's. I'm not always easy on the throttle...also had the re-flash. 26 mpg no good. |

My 08 only averaged 29 for the first 1000 miles. I had a reflash and immediately went to 38-43. It has been there for 14,000 miles. I'm twist happy with the right hand. (Message edited by XBGeorge on December 06, 2009) |

I had a feeling 26 was pretty extreme. I didn't buy the bike for gas mileage, but it would be nice to get something decent. It will be hard to ride in a group if I have to constantly stop for gas... I don't really plan on tinkering with the bike constantly - I just want to ride it trouble-free. I have a feeling I'd regret it in the future if I did have ecmspy capability but lost it. I'm sure it's much easier/widespread to tune it that way. Have any of the reflashes helped with the performance of the bike? |

You can potentially get 3x the fuel economy your getting now, I have done it. I would get the reflash, don't worry about ECMspy, it was hit and miss even on early 2008 models, so even if yours was compatible, you still may run into issues. |

"You can potentially get 3x the fuel economy your getting now, I have done it." HOW? Don't get it. Do you coast every where? Never get on the throttle? Never go above 2K? I've read that you're a hyper-mile'er. Don't really understand it. How can you enjoy a bike if you're not getting on it? |

Who said anything about not getting on it? Yes when I get on it I don't get as great fuel economy, but it next to impossible to get below 55mpg outside of a track. You just got to be smooth with your throttle inputs, never use the brakes including engine braking, avoid wasteful situations like traffic, red lights, and shift a little early. Yep, on the XB I shift well before 2k, and about 3k on the 1125. I ride a lot, something like 30k+ miles a year, I get plenty of times to open them up. Ever see a Blast wheelie? |

I got around 30 mpg on my 08 XB12Ss when it was new. Now I average in the mid 40 and go well into the 50 mpg range on the highway when cruising at 65 to 70 mph. Give it time, it was at least 3K before mine started to get better. Remember, cold engine, short trips, stop lights, etc kill your mileage. |

"Yep, on the XB I shift well before 2k" No wonder you get 65 mpg, Froggy! "Well below 2k" and I'm just about at idle. I don't have any experience with what a reflash would do for your bike, but I'd try anything. 26 mpg is too low even if you ride pretty hard everywhere in my opinion. I've done better than that flogging an R1. |

Best I've ever gotten on the highway with my 08 scg is around 43. Most of the time with medium riding I'm in the 36-38 range. I was lower till about 3-5k miles. It's a great bike, but you will never get 65 on the highway. Froggy, maybe on your bike, but not on mine. Light on the throttle and all that... I wouldn't care about the mileage so much if I could just get the damn surging around 4K to go away. I've even tried an xopti tune and he couldn't get it to go away either. I'm open to suggestions, not to threadjack... |

I used EMCSPY on my latest flashed XB12S. The AFV has worked it way down to 72. I got in the low 40's and it ran like crap. I reset it to 100 it ran great but got around 29 MPG I went to 90 still ran great but got in the upper 30s. I had the O2 sensor unplugged and waiting for a new one to come in. It came in before I worked my down to better mileage and still running good. As soon as the snow melts I'll see what happens with a better functioning (I hope) O2 sensor. |

Froggy is one end of the extreme. The other extreme is 26 mpg. Most people should be in the middle. |

I got 62 miles before the light came on this time as well. 27 mpg Its been fairly cold, but I let it warm up several minutes before the 6.3 mile (15 minute) trip to work. . I'm not racing everywhere, but I'm not light on the throttle. I'm going to have the dealer reflash it next week. Ill have them do the 1000 mile service as well. I tried to go where I knew the mechanic would do a good job, but they didn't sign up for the 7 years. |

Save yourself some coin and do the 1K yourself. There's nothing to it! Buy a manual and you're set. Save yourself $300+. If I can do it, you can... |

I just ordered a service manual. They will already be replacing the clutch cable. The only thing that really has me concerned is checking the primary chain. They said it should only be around $100 + fluids. I'll see if they can convince me for the piece of mind it brings me. |

Are there any specialty tools I would need to perform the 1K mile service myself? Thanks in advance. (Message edited by ryan954 on December 11, 2009) |

You need the torx bit and that's about it... you'll need the gaskets for the tranny cover though, and maybe a couple of new crush washer s for the drain plugs... LOL @ Froggy: "but it next to impossible to get below 55mpg outside of a track"... yeah right... that's why 99% of the ppl here never get 55mpg, even on the streets... |
