I purchased a brand new, 2008 XB9SX. It comes with a two-year, unlimited mileage warranty; however, I can extend the warranty up to seven years for more money. I have ninety days to decide if I want the extended warranty. Would you recommend the warranty? The seven year is about $1,500; the three, four, and five year is anywhere from $300 and up. I probably will put anywhere from 10,000-12,000 miles per year on the bike, and I plan to keep the bike forever. In terms of reliability and durability, is the warranty necessary or worth the money? Thank you in advance for your assistance. |

Warranties and insurance are like gambling. When you buy, you're betting against yourself (or your bike). The mothership sells the warranties to make money, so the average true cost of the warranty is less than the selling price. The question is, how mechanically able are you to fix something if it does break? Our bikes are very reliable. If it were me, I would skip it because I can fix about anything on my bike myself. My older brother....not so much. He bought a new Buell about a year ago, and I told him to purchase it (I didn't want to have to do work on his bike too!). This is not a question of whether or not it is worth the money, it is a question of whether or not it is worth the money to you. None of us can answer that for you. |

Electraglider (I think it was him) had some good advice on a similar thread, he said take the $1500, dump it into a savings account. If you end up never needing it, great, but if you do need it, its there for you. There isn't many single jobs would end up being $1500. |

Can you replace a broken motor for $1500.00....??? Or rebuild a broken transmission??? With the kind of high mileage expected...anything could happen. |

Anything could happen, and nothing could happen. If his engine explodes at 70k miles miles 4 years from now, just cross that bridge when you get to it. Plenty of options for repair depending on the issue. |
