Highly recommend the movie "Faster" Started it tonight, got pretty late, only watched about 45 minutes but its fascinating. Extremely interest and cool shots as well. Got the two disc version, 4 hours of action I believe. Those 500cc two strokes are nuts! |

Don't forget the sequel: "The Doctor, The Tornado and the Kentucky Kid." Footage from the first Laguna Seca GP in ten years. I was there (but couldn't find myself in any of the crowd scenes). |

After I watch this five dozen times Ill get the sequel ahaha. When I firsta drivea tha fyhundid isa likea f*ck is what I I remember him saying in the film ahaha. It was funny he had the strange accent and then got to the profanity and said it as clear as could be. His father is a pretty funny guy as well, almost sounds like a dad talking about his 10 year old son at a baseball game. Spareing you guys the transliteration he basically says "I am here because I have a son who is racing in the Moto GP etc... etc..." You have to see the clip to see what I mean but its interesting. |

How do the two stroke 500's compare in power, or I suppose performance (they are lighter) to a current 800cc Moto GP bike? To the 990cc? To a Superbike? |

you should ask that question on BARF. I'm sure you'll get some long winded and very detailed dissertation on the differences between the bikes LOL |

Haha not sure if that was sarcastic or something? I would if I wasnt blocked . Got blocked first time for posting "+1" in response to someones crash analysis post saying Enchanter, the mod, was overly harsh. Okay fine, block me. But I just got suspended for responding to what the OP was asking in a thread in the same section. I just clicked on new posts, didn't even know it was crash analysis and his question was about "your first time dropping your bike". I told about mine with my 50cc, got me 2 weeks of suspension. Enchanter is a power hungry and abusive mod IMHO... |

The old 2 smokes were man killers...My most fun place to watch them run was always at the exits from chicanes...it is amazing how much a frame could twist up under power...EVERYTHING flexed...add in the on/off light switch power...even more fun...The Yamahas in my opinion were the better of the bunch...the Kawis wouldn't stay together...and the Zuks were prone to throwing riders down...the hondas...well after MUCH work...were getting there... Then the plug got pulled on the 2 smokes. Shame...nuthin much sounds cooler than a square four 2 smoke at full tilt with open pipes....except maybe (completely different topic) Don Vesco's old Double TZ750 powered streamliner...that must have sounded wicked. |

I know they were brutally fast and hard to control but were they faster then a 990cc MotoGP bike? |

Jraice . Ive been a MOTOGP nut since 1978. By the time the 990cc 4 strikes came about . The 500cc 2 strokes had been detuned by the FIM so its hard to say being they where in backward delelopement . When they did race together in 2005 the 990cc where faster , but the 500cc bikes handled better ( more corner speed ) |

FIM? But overall they are similarly fast? And much faster then a current spec 800cc? Just seems like they are often talked about as the fastest bikes in the world but I wonder if thats truly their HP/weight or just the nature of the two stroke being very hard to ride, as well as the bike being very fast. About finished the first half of the movie (2 disc's)... Mccoy (sp?) is amazing... those slides are awesome! They show one shot a few times, its a left turn, as he exits he does a HUGE slide, lofts the front wheel under power while still leaned over and very close to the curbing, settles it down right as he turns in again for the next turn (almost was one turn with a double apex and he wheelied before the 2nd apex, crazy). |

Did not have traction-control and did have explosive power. |

Aptbldr as I said I understand they were crazy hard to ride, power came on hard and no traction control but were they more powerful (or power/weight, probably more fair) then a modern GP bike... thats what I am curious about. |

ya thats the other big difference between the 2 smokes and the current bikes...traction control. you'll see little slides now and then from stoner or somebody but nothing like the power slides of yore also, if you want to see which of the bikes are faster, just see the laptimes from the 2smokes, 990s, and 800s era. the 800s on average are faster at the same tracks that still have the same layout oh and i didnt know what happened on BARF, its not like they announce those |

Track times is one thing... I was just curious about straight line speed and acceleration. So a 500 is probably the best handling, although its raw unaltered handling with little electronic aid, a 990 is the most powerful and an 800 is the most high tech (traction control) while still being very fast and thus the fastest bike from a lap time view? |

the 990s started out with very little traction control but the traction control ramped up with development. at the end they had a ton of traction control as well. the 800s are so fast because of the amount of speed they carry through turns. get your turn wrong and you dont have enough squirt coming out of the apex. with the 990s there was so much power on tap, you can pick and choose your line. the racing in the days when riders can pick different lines was so much more exciting than the 800s now. you do get a bit of that old school battling in the WSBK races though |

Never thought about it like that... pretty interesting way to think about it. When its all about cornering speed the lines you take are much more critical but with extra power on tap you can pass with a different line... How come the smaller GP bikes are still very close battling races? They have way less HP then an 800. |

The 500's were the grizzly bears of racing they were like caged animals that would tear your arms off if you even looked wrong. I wish they would bring em back that was racing |
