Yup, I worked with a guy that raced Ducatis. He loved racing, but wouldn't dare ride out on the street. Said it scared him to death!

I am avid Road/Mountain Cyclist and Motorcyclist with 26 years of experience in all 3 disciplines including Racing! I have been hit by 7 cars & trucks while cycling on the road, low sided at Road Atlanta at over 100 mph in a race(my fault),have been wrecked numerous times while Criterium Racing and I have only broken my left wrist in 1 crit race and have had plenty of road rash in all of the cycling wrecks which amount to 3rd degree burns with embedded gravel and asphalt. I have no "failure in logic" I am full of LIFE and will live it to the FULLEST,I am not AFRAID OF DUSTING MYSELF OFF AND GETTING BACKUP TO DO IT AGAIN! I wonder if you would have the same RESOLVE IF YOU HAVE HAD ALL THIS HAPPEN TO YOU, MY GUESS IS ""NO""! I know how to be safe and I no how it feels to be "HURT AND HAVE CONTINUOUS PAIN", BUT I REFUSE TO GIVE IN! DEAN BUSH |

Probably a little of both. But mostly people around here in Gastonia,NC and surrounding area do not like sharing the road with anybody especially cyclists. I also have had alot of people including my doctor tell me I need to find a different safer activity, but like I said I have been riding for so long, I am 45, I hurt more when I do not ride, and I probably would weigh 200 lbs. Like I tell everybody that tells me that I must have a death wish, no I have a Life wish and that its not my time and is the only thing I am lucky at. Life is to short to be afraid and you are never guaranteed tomarrow. I also love skydiving, what a rush! |

The above statement combined with an argument to not wear the maximum amount of safety gear when riding in the most dangerous place for motorcyclists= major failure in logic to me. Do you seriously not see the logical disconnect?
Living life to the fullest, overcoming challenges, and the resolve to continue after injury are all reasons to be more diligent about personal safety- not a rationalization for being less serious about one's safety equipment. As happens all too often, it is after the accident that the individual grasps the importance of advice not heeded: "if only I could have...", "I wish I had known...", "I knew better...", "if I had it to do again...". I cannot imagine someone having to go through this scenario repeatedly- usually pain is the best teacher.
Luckily, after owning 25 motorcycles I had not had any incidents, but I remained an ATGATT zealot because I understood the risks. When my number came up, it was immediately apparent that I had made the intelligent choice. I am alive because I dressed for the crash- not the ride. The result of the SUV turning in front of me was eight fractures, two months of hospitalization, five surgeries, titanium hardware holding me together, over $500,000 in medical bills, and permanent scarring/disability. The surgeon commented that I would have lost my right foot above the ankle had I been wearing anything less than my "track day" boots- they protected me as they were designed to do.
I still ride, on the street and on the track, and I have not had to make any changes to my riding equipment- it's ATGATT or I don't ride. As always. Period.
I just do not understand why people would want to argue why it's not necessary to wear the most effective safety equipment all of the time- they are doing other riders a disservice.
If you haven't experienced it yourself- listen to those who have. If you have experienced it, and still have not learned- I don't know what to say... |

I prefer riding to recovery so I wear protective equipment. It's an easy decision. |

OK'A so if you followed your own advise of, I COULD HAVE, I WISH I HAD KNOWN,I KNEW BETTER. Then you would have been paying more attention and you would more than likely ,depending on how fast your brain responds to inputs and then in turn interprets the correct response in more than a timely manner you should have been able to avoid the car turning in front of you. Also you COULD HAVE not rode that day, and you KNEW BETTER than not having an escape solution and being able to ANTICIPATE motorist intentions. Unfortunately in all of my wrecks with vehicals I was hit from behind.Sorry about your acccident and am glad you are healthy. On your comment about "why would anyone want to argue its not necessary to wear the most effective safety equipment at all times", then by YOUR OWN ACCOUNT the MOST EFFECTIVE SAFETY EQUIPMENT FOR YOU IS A "TANK"!! I have been as close to DEATH as possiable by accidential Carbon Monoxide poisoning at work I did not know what was wrong except for being dizzy and tired I laid down trying to stop being dizzy and fell asleep and while asleep I heard a voice say "ITS TIME" and I said NO, because I had just got my BUELL. I woke up AND WAS RUSHED TO THE HOSPITAL AND the emergency room doctor said if I would not have woke my self up right then I would have died,and he had never seen anybody with the amount of CO2 in their blood as mine and live. I posted this question about riding shoes to get advise from people who actually use them for recomendiations I do not under stand the "NEED" FOR PEOPLE TO GET OFF THE SUBJECT! If YOU HAVE JUST GOT TO BE HEARD THEN YOU NEED THERAPY! I am not perfect nor do I want to be and my post was in no way ADVISING PEOPLE TO WEAR NON PROTECTIVE CLOTHING BUT SINCE YOU WANT TO PISS DOWN MY BACK AND TELL ME ITS RAINING, DO NOT EXPECT ME TO LAY DOWN! I am sure its goning to be a hell of a sight in seeing you on your Buell wearing "TANK" I am sure your gas mileage will suck!!! DEAN BUSH |

Two independent accident reconstruction experts agreed that it was impossible for me to avoid hitting the Nissan Armada that turned left directly in front of me. In the estimated 1.7 seconds I had to react I turned enough to change my trajectory from hitting between the passenger doors to hitting the right rear wheel well, where the impact actually broke the wheel off of the SUV's suspension (and, unfortunately, where my right leg impacted).
Point is- you must be prepared for the worst-case scenario because there are way more things out of our control than within it. Safety equipment is one of the things within our control. The right choice worked for me- I urge others to do the same... it's really a no-brainer.
BTW, I have some left over Xanax from the accident- it sounds like something you could use. |

Point is you can never be fully prepared for the worst-case scenario,because if you could then they would absolutely be no worse-case scenario! Do you ride now with a completely "UNCRUSHABLE SET OF RIDING GEAR" if not then you are a HYPOCRITE!
BTW, 1.7 SECONDS AND YOU NEVER MENTION TOUCHING EITHER BRAKE AT ALL! MAYBE YOU NEED TO PRACTICE "EMERGENCY BRAKING"! "IT SOUNDS SOMETHING YOU COULD USE"!! NO THANKS FOR THE XANAX, MAYBE YOU SHOULD START YOUR ON FOLLOWING AND PREACH TO THEM AND PASS AROUND THE "XANAX PLATE" TO GO ALONG WITH YOUR DOSE OF "HYPOCRISY"! Sorry, you lose your right to lecture anybody about any aspect of safe riding.
I'm glad you were originally asking about safety equipment, that shows a positive turn.
Perhaps you should also invest in mirrors, tail lights, turn signals and/or using them.

Evidently you did not read the part where I was riding my BICYCLE WHEN I WAS STRUCK FROM BEHIND WEARING MY APPROVED HELMET! AND I GUESS YOU ALSO THINK CYCLIST SHOULD NOT BE ON THE ROAD AND TRY AND SEE HOW CLOSE YOU CAN GET TO US AS POSSIBLE JUST CAUSE YOU THINK YOU ARE A BAD ASS MOTORCYCLIST,AND I GUESS IF YOU ARE HIT FROM BEHIND BY SOME STUPID IDIOT IN A CAR/TRUCK YOU ARE TO BLAME BECAUSE YOU DID NOT RUN OFF THE SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN TO GET YOUR SLOW ASS OUT OF HIS WAY!!! Ah yes, I missed it because it wasn't there. I did find it in an earlier post. You will forgive me if I assumed that, in a motorcycle forum, we were talking about motorcycles.
But, you know what, I'll stand by my logic. You're still not in a position to lecture on safe riding.
Your original post asked for recommendations: boots was my recommendation.
And, yes, I have commuted for years across city traffic on a bicycle - without incident.

Hey Dean,
I like my A-stars, they're the S-mx2 a shorty that I use for the street. Very comfy, secure ,IMO well engineered for safety. I like the fact that the rubber is kind of hard so if one is cast down onto that big belt sander of life, that rubber sole will slide rather than catch and rip a foot or leg off...........The heel indents are at an angle to let your foot rest naturally on the foot peg, that took a little getting used to , but now it feels like my feet are one with the bike, other than that can't say enough good things, and are reasonably priced to boot . Pun intended(?). They also come in a cool star wars storm trooper color scheme ,too cool for me I had to go with the black and silver/gray in the pic, they come in black with red trim too

Thanks for the info on the s-mx2 Xenox. I have looked at these for awhile now and was hoping someone who has them would reply,and give me so info about how they wear. I will probably wait till the end of the year to try and catch them on super clerance.I found my 1994 pair of A-stars GP PRO-VENT racing boots, thought they were thrown out. Talk about color they are primary white with blotches of , neon yellow,hot pink & lime green with toe slider,heel,and shin guard blue. the area for the shifter insert is gone on booth,all cracked from age and and being in closet. I have formed some covers,for the shifter area, out of some Street Scene aluminum Grille inserts and epoxied them on the boots over the shifter inserts. I am sure with these covers and the Pro-Vent on the boots there will be plenty of air flow. I have not tested them due to the rain, and I a special type of tubing on my shifter so should not be any problem with the aluminum shifter are on the boot hopefully. Thanks Dean |

Wow...Some nice riding shoes and I'm glad I read this whole post, as I may have learned a few things. I admit I am a sneaker guy and have been for a few years. I haven't found a pair of boots I liked and just can't wear workboots. I wear them all day but they do not work on the bike. Thanks for the good post. |
