Blip the throttle, it makes finding neutral much easier.

It's way easier for me if the bike is rolling just a little bit to get neutral. The Sporty is the same, actually MUCH harder than the XB if you aren't rolling just a bit.

With both, I get neutral once in a while from 1st to 2nd when it's raining and my foot slips resulting in a less deliberate motion. If I give 'em a good thunk they don't miss.

Not sure what is going on with your bikes. As I have never had a problem finding neutral, when I wanted to, nor finding an unwanted neutral.
I also have no problem backing up, with engine on, in first gear, clutch disenaged.

Proper clutch adjustment is required for easy shifting into neutral while stopped.

Proper shift linkage geometry is necessary for ease of shifting, in general... Ideally the shift lever and shaft lever should be adjusted to operate at the optimum sweep (90degs) of the arch segment.
The photo shows my Uly's shift linkage.

Make sure your clutch cable is adjusted correctly.

This is one time where the irregular HD firing order can actually be useful.

Assuming your clutch is properly adjusted, try slightly raising your idle speed to, say, 1500 rpms or so with the throttle while trying to get to N. The increased vibrations help to overcome whatever stiction there is in the gear changing mechanism as it disengages the gears.

Fresh fluids help too. Check your mileage and see if you are due for a change of trans fluid.

This works for me every time. I put the transmission in first (clutch in of course) then apply slight upward pressure on the shift lever until the neutral light comes on.

I have found on all the Buells I have ridden, that it is harder to find neutral at a stop when the engine is good and warm.

I usually go to neutral before I stop...I think it is the clutch dragging just a bit when it is warmed up...it's a Buell thing.

Call it part of the character of the machine...

Since I modded my shifter, finding neutral is not a problem anymore ; )

It happens sometimes, especially when I ride to the gym because I have on regular tennis shoes. Just scoot you foot further under the shifter so that it's resting more on the top of your arch, this will make it easier to throw into 2nd.

I guess it's just second nature to put it into nuetral while I'm rolling to a stop, but it just takes a little flick. I can usually find it shifting up or down. Takes practice.

Make sure your primary chain is adjusted correctly.

You can also play with the angle of the shift lever. moving it downward will help on being able to whack it upward.

I had the same problem of hitting neutral on a bike I bought. I did all the adjustments and then some. I finally had to tear the engine down. The shift cam was slightly buggered up and the shift dogs that come together when going in to 2nd were rounded slightly.

having the cases split I could manually shift it and watch all the gears moving around. I finally found the rough spot on the shift cam causing the problem.

Hopefully your problem is just an adjustment problem.

Miko, what's the story on your shifter mod and is it a reverse pattern?

Yep, reverse pattern. My foot fits snug between the two "shifters", no need to move over/under, just move the foot up and down, kinda like the cruiser bikes with heel and toe. I used 2 stock shifters, welded them together and drilled a few extra holes, to adjust the ratio, hence the travel needed to shift between gears. range is from 1.1:1 to 1.7:1. The flat piece behind the rubber inserts does not let my shoe to rub on the clutch cover. I now have a shortened Uly linkage, since the R linkage is too short. I wanted to retain the factory look, just like I did with my handlebars:

Miko, nice. I have often thought that a shifter with two pegs such as yours (only with a normal pattern) would be an ideal setup because one would always have their foot in the right place all the time to make a shift. Glad to see the idea has merits. Got me thinking...
