After months of looking, I finally picked up a used 2007 Xb12Ss. It's all stock. Has 3900 miles on it.

At this point I've used it only for commuting to work. About 30 miles total per day, almost all of which are on the freeway.

First question - I'm only getting 39 MPGs. I was expecting more like 50 from what I had read. Think there is cause for concern on my end or could the lower MPG be simply because of my riding style?

Second question - I have very little time to tinker on the bike and hardly any mechanic skills. Plus this is the first Buell I've had. I wonder if I should take it to Harley of Glendale to have them inspect it. Worthwhile or a waste of money?

Final question - An after market exhaust (and I guess a retune?) sounds like a great idea to me. What's the easiest way to get to the finish line on that? Take it to Harley Glendale and have them order the parts and do all the work?

I used to get 39-40mpg, 12,000 miles later and I am still getting 39-40mpg. I also commute through Atlanta traffic, and ride like I don't care about gas mileage.

1200CC+Vtwin= not as great gas mileage. The tune and exhaust will help very much, plenty of Xb exhaust. Recommend the Jardine, D&D, Drummer, Specops, etc. Check out www.americansportbike.com for good Buell parts, as well as http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/17143/17143.html?1254513162 You can tune it yourself via ECMSpy and a cable from American Sport Bike.

I'd start with making sure you have the latest flash in your ECM. You should be getting 45 on the highway if not more.

It depends on your riding style and rpm: 30-3500 rpm gives better mpg, 4500 gives more smg (smiles per gallon).

Unless you hear something bad about the dealership, give them a first try and see how it goes. My local dealer is good, sounds like I'm lucky that way. However, my '03 9R is the least fussiest, least demanding bike I've owned.

Congrats on the XB purchase.

My 200512R gets about 47 MPG or so. This is with a 35 mile one-way commute thru open highway, heavy traffic, lights, surface roads, and WOT when traffic allows. You should be getting better than 39, I believe.

Find a dealer who is familiar with the precise tuning needed on these bikes. If your tune is off just a little, it will run Ok, but it can be a LOT better with a good tune and performance exhaust.

I sent you a detailed PM

Glendale still has one or two decent Buell mechanics but you have to ask for them by name - otherwise you're likely to just get sent to the next mechanic with an open work bay.

Call Ernie (fellow Buell racer and Buell sales) - he can get you the name of the mechanic to ask for.

Otherwise, you'll have to head to Bartels, Antelope Valley or Fordyce.

PM if you need more info.

Ernie at Glendale HD is a good guy. Bought my bike from him. I'm sure he'll help you out. Across town, close to where I live but further from you, Chris at Bartels has worked on my bike and I'm happy with his work. I had an accident in June '08 and he fixed my bike perfectly.

He lives near Glendale, CA - not AZ.

I made the same mistake when I first heard about Glendale and Buells. Actually CALLED and got talking a little when the guy on the other end realized I was in CALIFORNIA and wanted to stop by in the afternoon.
