im finding the bike coughs and spits a lot almost like its missfiring. It does it more when its cold but occasionally when warm, pretty nerve racking when on the hwy (really jerks). xb12 07 with about 1500 miles, only mod is a drummer with stock ecm. At first I thought it was just the ecm learning the new can, but that was 1000 miles ago? Not sure if it did this before the can, put it on right when I first bought it. thinking i should of remapped? (Message edited by nbpcp on September 09, 2009) |

Is it an original Drummer (made from stock can) or an SS Drummer? Stock paper air filter or K&N? I've never heard of an original Drummer not running alright with a stock ecm & K&N filter so I'm curious. |

Its not his muffler doing this. |

stock filter, stock ecm. one time it coughed hard enough after I gave it a little rev that it stalled, restarted it while coasting through a green light. |

I'd start with a TPS reset, then check for an intake leak. |

mines done it from day one, usually when i try and blip the throttle from idle or low rpm. |

my bike is showing some weird things too. when the bike is cold the bike coughs and loses power and sometimes when taking off from a start it dies. once the bike heats up its a champion i can feel the extra ponies barreling down the road i think its something to do with the ecm and the fuel delivery because i ported the heads from a bunch of carbon, i had 3 of the valve seals with leaks (i dont have another bike to refer to) but it was alot of carbon. maybe the ecm adjusted itself over-time to compensate for the shit/carbon buildup that was restricting the air flow.. now that the ports are clear there is more air and the ecm is confused because there is a change in the engine AirFuelRatio i think you may get my theory. could this be it? should i let the ecm have time to learn? if so, what can i do to speed up the learning process? if not, what could be the problem that makes the bike pissy when cold? EDIT~ any different solutions from what has already been said here? and my old air filter was FILTHY FILTHY FILTHY, so i replaced it with a new one (even more air to confuse the ecm?) Check grounds and the battery connection. My bike would do that occasionally and I found a loose battery cable and ground. |

'tps, tps, tps'....read on here many times you don't reset the tps with the drummer, but what harm could it do, might give it a try. Starting to think its not can related though. An intake leak? do the seals tend to go with so few miles? was broken in hard though, demo. |

All above ideas are cheap'n'easy to check/do: TPS reset; intake leak check; check grounds/leads. Start simple, work your way into complicated and expensive options. |

Another thing I'd check is the static timing. |

WTF is every talking about. If you blip the throttle on these bikes below 1500 or so rpms, it's going to cough. Try setting the WOT to 60 TPS and 1500rpms instead of the stock 50/1100. That's what I use for the xb9, not sure what the stock 12 settings are. It clearly gets to much fuel if you blip the throttle at low rpms because changing the WOT enrichment settings makes it cough less. It's hard to get these heavy, long(rods) internal parts to spin up quickly, that's why I4's have tiny pistons and rods and spin like a top. No matter what you do, it will never rev fast from idle like a I4, but you can make it better. I doubt it's an intake leak. An intake leak isn't going to amount to a hill of beans with the throttle open, it would have to be a huge leak and that would cause some crappy idle. This is not meant for the original poster, but for the throttle blipper. |

i'll check the static timing.. i doubt its a intake leak because just put some new ones on there nice and tight.. i dont get how the thottle positioning sensor reset will solve it but i dont have the time for that right now |
