I replaced my intake seals awhile back because I was getting some slight rough running issues. Nothing serious but not normal. When I took one seal off I noticed the bottom was wet and not dry like the rest of the seal.

So I put a set of the blue genuine james seals on and thought that had fixed it but its still there. I tried to pinpoint the leak with the spray method but got no deviation in rpm. Im convinced I didnt get the intake sealed right.

I might get a set of stock seals and see if I can try it again. Those blue seals made the intake hard to line up. Is there a trick to torquing the intake back on? Do I retorque after a heat cycle or while warm?

Your way better off using the genuine james seals than the stock. They are way better. I can't really answer any questions, but I would definitely stick with the james.

Johnny,
By any chance was your ECM 'hunting' for the idle before you replaced the seals? I am trying to solve idle problems on my XB.

No hunting tpoppa. Idle is fine.

If you were going down the road at 35 mph and holding the rpms steady as can be in 3rd gear you would feel some slight stumbles.

around 3500-3800 rpms? if so that is right at the "hole" in the torque curve.

My bike doesn't like to be held there, but mine is somewhat modified.

Its at around 2,000-2,500 rpms. I get a little decel popping too. This is with race ecm and latus pipe, reset afv and tps. AFV always goes to 105-109.

I wonder if a plug wire arcing to the block or frame would display these symptoms?

A plug wire arcing would produce a definite miss that you would feel as jerk. If you are spraying carb cleaner around your intake and you don't get a rise in RPM then you do not have a leak there. It is common for all vehicles to have a build up of fuel on the bottom of the intake runners and around seals; as the hot vapors cool they condense and collect around the lowest point or along irregularities of the intake. My bike does the same thing and i am convinced it is either the fueling or timing.

How well did it run in that rpm range before you put all the "race" stuff on?

It was my experience when I had my XB9R that it would run smoothly below 2500 rpms with the stock ECM, race air cleaner and with either the stock muffler or the race muffler.

But when I put in the race ECM and had it properly dialed in to the TPS zero, it would run slightly rough in the 2k - 2.5k range but run great above that range.

So I'm pretty sure that any slight roughness in throttle response with the race ECM is probably due to its non-EPA calibration meaning that the race ECM is designed for full throttle and racing conditions without regard for part throttle smoothness, low noise/pollution emissions and economy.

You gets what you pays for.
You can make more power and noise but at what cost?
In this case, you've got slight roughness at 2000 - 2500 rpms. No Big Deal, right?
If it were me, I'd live with it and be happy. YMMV.

I bought it used with the race ecm and a jardine on it already. I never noticed it then. When I put the latus muffler on it is when I noticed it or thereabouts.

Id try the stock ecm but the guy who sold it to me tossed it when he made the swap. It would be interesting if that fixed it.
