So I am adding bags to my bolt for the times in which I commute. I have heard that the stick on plastic guards that came with the kit were low quality and the bags I am getting do not include them. How do you protect your Firebolts tail faring from be marked up by your bags? |

The previous owner of my 04 ran the bags on it like I do, pretty much all the time. So when I took ownership, the tail section had already been chewed up by the bags. What I did after I was unsuccessful at buffing out the scratches was go down to Autozone and pick up a roll of this
This is a metallic sticker material that seems pretty durable. Take this material and cut out a design that flows with the bike and stick them on to take the abuse.
This has currently got about 13k miles on them and I run the bags all the time. As you can see, the bags have gone through the sticker material already so you could either double up on the application or simply replace it when you change tires. The best I could come up with...... |

My stock Buell Firebolt bags also chewed up my plastics. Finally got the idea to go to Hobby Lobby, get some quality thick felt and glue pieces to the bags and straps anywhere they meet the tail section of my XB9R. Works quite well. Used Elmer spray-on glue and has held for the season. Before I used the felt I was applying blue painters tape to the tail section every time I installed the bags. |

low tack shelf paper or even the mesh/rubber drawer liners from the home section of your favorite local department store work well, but the best is finding some neoprene (wet suit material) material and cutting pads that fit between your bike and the bags. The neoprene is more expensive, but really works well. You could also try the universal fit "stomp grip" pads that are usually used by racers and can be peeled off and stuck back on repeatedly as long as the back side is not allowed to come in contact with dirt/oil. Hope this helps, or at least gives you an idea. I've used all of these through the years with the exception of the stomp grip, but I have used that on street and race bikes for the rider to hang on to with their knees and it worked great in that (more demanding) role. |
