I just found a 04 Lightning with 1700 miles on it for $4K. It comes with the tail bag and the side bags that are new in the wrapper never installed. Are there any problems with the 04 Lightnings?

General consensus over the years is that the '04s are well sorted out. My 04 12R has been trouble free for about 6k miles (ride the Uly more) and runs like a raped ape.

Fantastic bike. Mine has 27,000 on it with no problems to speak of. Runs better than new. To me, the 04 and 05's are the best years and have seemed to have the least amount of problems. Their has been many improvements over the years since, but all and all a great year. Thats a steal of a deal.

I can only think of three things to look out for.

1. the wire that goes to the horn is routed in such a way that it rubs on the horn bracket mounting screw. the fix involves shortening the bolt, rerouting the wire, and applying chafing gear ( heatshrink or tape) to the damaged wire.

2. kick stand bolt may need to be upgraded

3. If you ever hear any thumping inside the tranny it could be the compensator sprocket nut came loose.
Old torque setting was 190 ft lbs
new torque setting is 240 ft lbs

I have not heard of any 04 specific problems other than the horn wire.

Edit: the #1 horn info was copied & pasted from an old (very old) post from Fullpower concerning the 'horn wire' problem.

Gater,

I have an 05 (almost the same), and I have over 32,000 miles, seems to run better then the bolt with only 6000.

Great bike, would love to keep mine if I could afford to.
~I have to sell off the toys to pay bills.
Limited hours at work sucks..

Anyone know of anyone that is looking for an 05 lightning, I have an awesome one for sale!

My wife just said a no go on the lightning. Part of me wants to buy it and the other part says save my money for a ULY.

My wife gave me a GREEN Light on the XB12S. She told me I would have to let her go to 15 more Bruce Springsteen concerts. I will be picking up the bike this weekend. YES!

+1 on what Metalstorm said.
My kickstand bolt broke around the 15k mile mark and my compensator nut came loose around 19k miles. Other than that the 04 has been flawless. Well with the exception of tires getting chewed up and spit out, but I think that "problem" is on all xb year models.
That appears to be a heck of a deal, you'll enjoy every minute of it.

That's awesome. 4k is a great price. I have a 04 12s and the only problem I had was the kickstand bolt came out. Enjoy and post some pics!

As long as you don't have to go to the concerts with her, I'd say that's a great deal.

I don't have to worry about going to the concerts with her on the bike. She said she "would not ride on a bike if the Lord himself was driving the bike."

Thanks for all the nice commits. I am going to call the HD dealer today to see if they have frame pucks. If they don't I will order them from American Sport bike. I want to get some axle sliders and a luggage rack Maybe a wind-shield, heated grips and the type of hand guards that come on the ULY. I am going to the DMV this morning.

The polly heaters work great and have a nice minimally invasive install. I suspect they hold up better long term then traditional grip heaters as well. They take a little longer to warm up though, but even in 30 degrees on the highway I start feeling the heat about the time I start needing the heat...

Nice bike!

When you get the frame pucks, make SURE you get the little tube of primer that comes with each one. It is applied to the surface of the frame before sticking on the puck.

You should clean the frame with a non-aggressive solvent of some sort to remove the residue. Many people use silicone sprays to wipe on and make it "look purdy" - stuff like Armor All. Problem is that NOTHING sticks to silicone.

(don't worry, the primer is clear!)

Hey Guys,

Thank you for the advice and getting my photo's squared away. The lady's at the DMV could not believe that the bike only had 1600 miles on it. One lady questioned it and was thinking about giving me a not actual miles title because the guy wrote heavy when he wrote actual miles on the title and questioned his penmanship. I got it fixed the only thing that saved me was the bill of sale. I will not be riding today because it the rain is coming down. The only other thing is I can not put the seat on with the side bags with the tail bag attached. It must be a catch to get the seat on with all the bags attached.

If the frame pucks don't come with the primer as mine didn't, you can use some brake cleaner and isopropyl. Mine are holding up, YMMV.

I ordered my frame pucks and the new clutch cable bracket part number N0012.1AAA. There is nothing wrong with the clutch cable bracket that is on the bike this is a sturdier bracket. It is listed in the 2021 parts catalog. My brother put one of these on his 07 ULY when the old bracket broke and his cable melted.
