Hey all-

A buddy of mine just bought an '07 Uly from a dealer- it was a demo bike with 2500 miles. It was running rough right away, so he called the dealer and they said to run a couple of tanks of fuel through it and see how it was. That didn't help so he brought it in. They did a TPS reset and changed plugs and said it was running great. But it ran the same when he picked it up!

He is on his way over here for me to help diagnose the problems. I don't really trust the TPS reset, so I'm going to redo that. It is all stock, including the exhaust, so I will also reset the AFV and check for codes while I'm in there. I'll also verify the exhaust actuator functionality. He said it doesn't have much power, so I thought I'd also check the primary chain tension (maybe they adjusted it and it's too tight?).

What else would you suggest I look at? Anything obvious that I'm missing?

Recheck the plugs, they may have fired it up and shut it down too quickly, causing them to foul. Also check plug wires for chafing against the frame, or small cracks.

Maybe an intake leak.

Check battery and connections.

Thanks. Well I was right, TPS reset done wrong. Clutch was also out of adjustment, and primary was about 8 oz (!!) over full. Primary chain looked good.

Rest the TPS and AFV, richened up the map 3% across the board, drained some oil from the primary, adjusted the clutch, adjusted the clutch cable and all is well.

Seriously. It wouldn't even idle right- the idle bobbled around from 800 rpm to almost 2000! Oh well, all is great now!

Oh, and the rip around town I did afterward totally fueled my Uly-lust!

Oh, and the disappointing part? He bought the bike from one of the "good" Buell dealers! I can only imagine what it would be like from one of the poor ones that I always hear about! It was from Zylstra in Elk River, MN. The General Manager, Mike rides am XB12S, one of the sales guys rides an X1, another one rides an 1125, one of the service guys rides an S1, and I think there's another service guy that rides Buell too but I can't remember. They always have about 12 or more Buells on the floor, and they generally are enthused about the Buell line. Man...what a bummer.

Man, I just keep hearing worse and worse reports from folks who have to deal with Zylstra. Too bad--good folks, used to really push the Buell philosophies and seemed to give a $hit.
