I'm planning a trip to the skyline drive area at the Shenandoah Nat Park in Virginia. I've never been and would very much appreciate tips/shared experiences from anyone that has been there. Going the friday morning before Labor Day. Which roads are best for twisties, scenery, and not so heavy traffic? Cops heavy there? Thanks all! |

Skyline drive is a toll road and 35mph. Blue Ridge Parkway is adjacent to it, is free, and speed limit is 45mph. It's a great road, but not if you want to squid it up. If you want to detour off the parkway, Routes 56 and 60 are my favorites. |

You should also check out 211 between Sperryville and Luray. It runs perpendicular to Skyline and has easy on/off access. It's just a short stretch, but it has some pretty decent curves. I always hit it when I'm in the neighborhood. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=3 8.655756,-78.277245&daddr=Lee+Hwy%2FUS-211&geocode =%3BFW7lTQIdYy1U-w&hl=en&mra=mi&mrsp=0,1&sz=12&sll =38.669696,-78.283081&sspn=0.13483,0.307961&ie=UTF 8&t=h&z=12 |

I've been on Skyline Drive a number of times. The 35 mph speed limit is HEAVILY ENFORCED, but it is for your own safety. The deer there are so thick that if you don't see at least a half a dozen by the time you've reached the end you aren't paying attention. In addition, thanks to well-meaning (but foolish) tourists who feed them from cars, they hang out in the roadway looking for handouts. It is a BEAUTIFUL road, but just pay attention and watch yourself. |
