Does the 12 muffler definitely flow better than the 9?

prolly, but a drummer or jiardine or any other will out-flow any stock.

That wasn't the point of the question. Not asking about aftermarket, on purpose.

Yes the twelve is less restrictive than the xb9. Inlet size is the same, outlet size is differant.

The 12 muffler can be made even less restrictive by simply opening the muffler valve. I assume your question is aimed at putting a 12 muffler on a 9 where you would not have the servo control.

The 9 will not run as well with a 12 muffler on it due to the reduced back pressure. Or at least that was my experience.

Retuning would certainly be in order. Even then you may or may not get the results you want. If the desire is a peak HP number for bragging rights it may work well. Overall performance on the street I have doubts and you will pay a weight penalty for adding the muffler bearing. He seems to have a purpose in mind that he is not sharing, so...

You guys are sort of close. I have posted this elsewhere with limited response...

Essentially no one makes a quiet performance exhaust. I had the race kit and hated the dip in power where I ride the most. I went back to stock. I don't like the way stock fuels at low RPMs. I then went with a Drummer and Race ECM, it tried to make me deaf. Loved the performance, but the noise is just not for me (plus I live in a noise-sensitive So Cal beach city) and made the bike unbearable to ride on long trips. I have been running the Race ECM and stock exhaust for about 1000-miles with no real issues, just a bog when you hit the throttle hard. The idea is to find a muffler that flows better than a stock 9 to take advantage of the Race ECM fueling, but quieter than the Drummer so I can be more stealthy and more comfortable on my bike. I don't care about peak power, the bike has enough of that for the way I ride.

I am looking for smooth power more than anything. My thought was to install a 12 muffler, and possible 12 headers to free up the flow and keep the Race ECM. I could either activate the muffler bearing in ECMSpy, or modify the 12 muffler with the valve open.

I have spoken back and forth with a BadWeB member in Switzerland who has the same bike (CityX) with a similar setup and he says he loves it, achieving a goal similar to my own. Although, he is running bigger valves and a custom map, but retains the active muffler bearing.

Any additional thoughts regarding the valve and/or the 12 headers would be awesome.

Thanks,

--Sean

I would consider doing some tuning with ECMspy/megalogviewer with your stock exhaust. I'm not sure how much better you can get it but the stock exhaust sounds like it should be pretty good for what you say you are looking for. Just get tuned for better performance, not EPA compliance. If that fails your expectations then you can start spending $$$ all you want.

You can get a quiet performance muffler. Look to Europe, and expect to pay a premium though. The exchange rate does NOT favor the dollar. Check in the sponsors for Trojan Horse, they have an excellent selection of E-certified STAINLESS STEEL mufflers for the XBs.

I have talked to Trojan, I just can't justify spending that much money on a muffler when my wife is out of work and I have a house payment.

As I said before, I purposely have not asked questions about aftermarket products in these posts because I have explored those options already.

I will post some pics of the insides of a 9 and a 12 pipe this evening if I'm not working overtime. They are essentially the same pipe internally except some gases flow thru different pipes first and there is no valve in the 9. I'll try to get them up tonight. I'm swamped still....

thespive,u can make ur own for less than 150.00.
and if the muffler sound is not what you like, you are only out the muffler cost.
send me a PM if u want more info on what i have and where i got my parts.if u have a MIG welder or a friend who does and u can do it under 150.

if u make ur own be SURE to firmly and securely mount it with no tension from the muffler to the header pipes.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xm-Z1dk0yeI

Thanks Odie.

Pogue, is your design going to keep a stock-like volume level? That is one of the "holy grails" I am looking for.

I just want a bike with good rideability and smooth power delivery. Any increased power over stock would just be a bonus.

What is the consensus on matching a 12 muffler with 12 headers? Should I keep the 9 header in this experiment or use the 12 header?

Thoughts?

i don't think that bigger headers will be best for the 9 motor.
from what i understand, the proportionally smaller pipes are so to maximize the scavenging effect. replacing them with the 12's headers would reduce headloss/frictional losses, and flow a max volume better, but may not give you a desirable .... for lack of a better technical term: 'UMPH'

and on that note; the same thoughts for 'equal length' headers. might be good for a twin-pin cranks, but not HD v-twins

mine is very quiet for holding s steady speed.still a bit loud but if u go easy on throttle till u clear out of the HOA areas it can work.and when u need to be loud open the throttle.if you hold steady speed..its quiet...the intake makes more noise than the exhaust LOL

We'll see what the experiment shakes out, my servo stuff came today and I pick up the muffler next week.
