Maybe Im an idiot but how can I fill the tranny with the bike upright until it gets to the clutch spring? Seems to me as soon as it gets over the lower edge of the opening its going to just start pouring out. Ill adjust the clutch while I wait for the (hopefully) speedy answer I know you guys will get me . Thanks! PS: Did regular oil change already as well, tonight I am doing oil and clutch. Will do other checks/adjustments as well as primary chain tomorrow. That will conclude my 5000 mile service. Regular oil change was pretty straight forward except that a lot of oil got spilled when I took the stock filter out... Going with Amsoil now, feels much better putting clear oil into the motor then the Royal Purple which is dark purple. |

That is to the clutch spring on the bottom of the clutch...the oil level will be below the clutch adjuster cover. Use a small funnel to put the oil in through the clutch adjuster hole. Or a squirt bottle. Or fill it throught the vent tube. If it's like a Blast, it will take exactly one quart of oil. Where should the oil level be... According to pictures and wording in my service manual I fill until its on the bottom of the clutch diaphrom (sp?) spring, which is what covers the screw which is used when adjuster the clutch mechanism inside the clutch cover. There is no way its not going to pour over the edge. |

Just added an entire quart... Just barely touching bottom of inside of case (what you can see, closest to cover atleast)... Please somebody make more sense of how much oil to put in here. |

Okay, here it is. A graphic showing clearly where the fill level is. I agree. this comes up so often (How is someone new to Buell/motorcyle maintenance to know what a clutch spring looks like?), this diagram should be posted somewhere prominent, not buried in the archives.

Thats what I thought... I will go take a fourth (literally) close look at the manual but I am pretty sure it CLEARLY has an arrow going from "Clutch diaphragm spring" to the spring that goes over number 2, the clutch adjusting spring. My oil was just touching the actual number 1, I just closed up the bike, I had added the entire bottle but didnt shake out EVERY drop so I am guessing I have the proper amount... If it shifts fine may I assume I am safe or should I open it up sometime soon and see what it looks like? I have it on a pitbull rear stand, not sure if that messes up the level to much. |

Usually 1 quart is just a couple ounces too much if you're just changing fluid, as there is still a little trapped in there that doesn't come out unless you remove the primary cover. So just putting 1 quart in maybe just a little too much. Your fluid level should be like the dotted line in the pic above. |

Is it safe to ride slightly over filled? As I said, I didnt shake every drop out but I did use most of the quart. I will head over to the dealer and grab another gasket sometime soon though and take it apart for a more thourough check. Should it be checked cold or hot? |

Your clutch may feel funny with too much fluid. I don't think the that is matters if you check it hot or cold. If I remeber correctly, I was 4 ounces shy of a quart last time I changed the primary fluid. I just recently changed it, but this time I had to remove the primary as I broke my clutch cable, LOL. A turkey baster, or straw will pull excess fluid out with ease. Just be careful with the straw LOL. (Message edited by DennisTA15 on July 26, 2009) (Message edited by DennisTA15 on July 27, 2009) |

A tad over will not hurt. Drain it. Put a quart in. Ride. You'l be fine -- unless you are obsessive-compulsive. Even then it will just be in your head. |

Jordan, no worries. One quart is all you need. |

Thanks guys, feels good, better then before I changed it (after the dealer serviced it shifting got notchy, never bothered to have them fix it, just waited till I did the 5000), and in the future I will check the level (hot or cold?) and use a baster to pull a little out. Also have yet to do the primary chain so that might make shifting even better (assuming the dealer could've screwed that up as well). All in all I am happy with the way its running! Idled it for 30 seconds and checked oil before leaving, was pretty far up dip stick, just checked it after my ride (in mountains, at night so light throttle but some gas here and there) and its just on the lower half of the dipstick, going to get it refilled tomorrow and then start seeing how much it burns (in relation to the Royal Purple which burned a good bit). Nice to have clear oil and not purple oil! Also on the torque specs, did 14 foot pounds for the tranny drain bolt, felt fine. Did oil by hand and made it REAL tight, then checked with torque wrench to see if I had reached the lowest recommendation from the factory (had not)... Why are they spec'd to different torques when they both seem to be the same bolt? I am thinking next time Ill torque them both to 20. |

Don't torque them... that's a good way to strip the threads, especially when following the factory spec. All you need to do is seat the o-ring. |

Thanks Nik, I didnt torque them all just wanted an idea of where they were compared to factory spec. In hindsight (after seeing factory spec for the tranny) I probably made the oil one a bit to tight (still under lowest factory spec though) and next time I will make it more along the lines of what I did with the tranny. |

have yet to do the primary chain It's a 5 minute job, why hesitate to make sure your bike isn't right? |

I think it's in the handbook...All service must be completed in one day. |
