I was at a cook-out at a friends house for the fourth of July. As his Dad was leaving the party in his Mitsubishi Mighty Max he told me that he should've had him tell me about his truck. Somehow he has it running on water & hydrogen peroxide. It does use a little gasoline but it's very seldom that he has to put any in it. He's showing 80-85 mpg. |

Oil change in the might Blast every 2500 miles...cause I run the holy crap out of it...on fast rides, the rev limiter is my "shift light"...
As an aside...it used to use a fair amount of oil...I frequently had to add some during gas fills on longer rides...after I switched to Mobil-1 20-50 V-Twin oil...it has quit using oil... |

I don't change at intervals. I only get to ride maybe 3000-3500 miles in a season. I change the oil before my first ride and again when it's time to put it away.
Oil that sits for a year will break down even if you start the bike at intervals. |

I generally dont get to ride as much as I would like so I only wind up changing the Engine/Trans oils maybe once a year or 3-5K miles. I use Mobil 1 VTwin Synthetic in both holes and Purolator Pure One synthetic filters from Advance Auto.

I use Mobil 1 Vtwin synthetic and Mobil 1 filter. I use the harly stuff for the primary. I follow the book. |

My goodness, I better check the expiration date on the oil cans when I purchase to be certain my oil hasn't broken down even before I use it. |

@Buellboiler: Haha, I can't help but feel like perhaps your being sarcastic!
Seriously though, oil in a sealed container will last until the container fails. Oil in a crankcase, even in a brand new engine, will be affected by moisture that forms as temperature fluctuates. The additives are actually what break down, the oil itself will pretty much only break down at higher temps. |

Nope. It's really bad to leave dirty oil in a bike during storage- all the contaminants in the oil will cause corrosion in the engine. Any engine being stored should have fresh oil. Additionally, due to the condensation that forms during storage, the oil should be changed when it is brought out of storage.
So, at the very minimum, you should change the oil at the beginning of the riding season, and at the end. Of course, depending on your mileage you may need to change it during riding season too. Oil and filter is really cheap insurance. |

Every 5K and I use The Black Buell Filter and Mobil 1 V-Twin oil.
But I ride year round and I ride it like I stole it! |

Nope. Keeping oil in it keeps even worse things from happening. An engine drained of oil is nothing more than an empty metal can filled with many voids and dissimilar metals just waiting to corrode. For long-term storage it's actually good to remove the plugs and fill the engine with oil until it pours out the spark plug holes to displace any trapped moisture. |

Thanks for the info. Would it hurt anything to put a cheaper oil in it for Winter storage and then run the good stuff (Amsoil) during riding season? |

Sure. However, I would keep the type the same (mineral, semi-syn, or full-syn) and I would use the same weight. For example, if I had winter storage I would use the cheapest full-synthetic 20W-50 oil I could find, but then replace it with Amsoil 20W-50 when spring arrives. Thankfully, though, I live in Florida and have no need for winter storage- we ride all year. |

Winter storage in North Carolina? Does it even snow where you live Zatco81? Winter storage in NY is about 9 hours after I get home from work and then sleep before going to work the next day.  |

It snows about once a year, generally an inch or so and it stays on the ground a few days. The rest of winter it's balls cold. I'm sure it's not cold to you though. You're conditioned...I'm not. I don't ride if it's below 60. |

At least 2/3 of the year is at or below 60! HTFU or get some heated grips and a jacket. I am more comfortable riding my bike to work in 25 degree weather than I am in my car. |

The last few mornings that I've got done with work it's been 52 degrees. - I love it!!
Back on topic though, I change mine every 3K miles with Syn3. |

My oil gets changed every 2k miles - overkill yes, but oil costs less than engine parts and is worth my peace of mind.
I'm running HD dino oil ATM. Will go back to RP MaxCycle once my case of HD oil is gone, and will switch to Amsoil once the case of RP is gone.
I use a K&P Engineering lifetime billet oil filter. It will take about 25 oil changes to pay for itself, but the finned design lowered my oil temps and I like seeing exactly what's in the filter element at every oil change. |

I've tried Mobile 1, Amsoil, Harley,etc. I've been sticking with Schaefer. Better all around for sure. I ride the piss out of my bike and I can tell the difference big time. |
