Hi. I have an 06 XB9SX with the Buell detachable saddlebags. I took them off for the winter and I went to install them again today and I can't remember how they went on! Help, I'm an idiot! Can anyone give me a hand? Thanks in advance for your help! |

I'll try and take a pic if no one else chimes in. I got my bike from PO who had installed them, so I don't know if he did it per the book, but at least it's a help. |

I don't really like how the straps interfere with the seat clips (both side ones as well as the locking clasp). And I'm not thrilled about how the straps push things around near the ECM and other wiring. But the bike came this way, and I am still working out carrying options. Right now I am trying out a bike messenger bag. Works pretty well, but I would still need a bag on the bike (not on me) like a tank bag at least, or maybe the ventura rack/bag setup. |

I think you got the wrong bags. I have seen other bikes with the correct bags and it does not have any of the fitment issues you show. |

Fahren- thanks for your help, I'll give that a try. It appears that these bags are not made specifically for the Lightning model, maybe that's why the installation seems weird. Did Buell make these bags to be "universal?" |

There is 3 versions of the bags, one for Firebolts, one for 52" wheelbase Lightnings, and then another one for 54" wheelbase Lightnings. Do you see any markings for a part number on them? |

The big velcro strap goes round the passenger peg the little one round where the reflecter is or was |

Thanks for putting a bug in my ear about this - I never bothered to think about re-doing it, since it was done when I got the bike, and I didn't get installation instructions included. Now I have another to-do. My bike gives me longer honey-do lists than my wife! |

Fahren: that is the way the bags install. You may not have the 'Lightning Long' bags. On my bike, the bags have a short strap at the back to loop around the bracket under the rear reflector, and another short strap at the front to loop around the pass peg support. That way the bags are up against the rear turn signals. The rearmost strap on mine has Velcro on the back, so a knot isn't necessary. And the front strap is sewn so it fits between the battery and the wiring harness plugs. In other words, the picture is the correct way to install them, you just need to fiddle with fitment a bit to get the bags an inch or two further back. And that way the straps don't interfere w/ the seat latches. Hope this helps, Dave. (Message edited by akbuell on June 23, 2009) |

Awesome. Goin' fiddlin'. The bags have that short velcro'd strap at the back, but it is not strapped onto anything! Thanks for the encouragement and advice! Update: all good! Thanks to all. 2 top straps going across under the seat; the third top strap is slung under the frame (going to get cruddy under there over time, though). And the front and rear lower straps are keeping the bags close in where they should be. I don't like how the bags push the turn signals, though. They stay permanently a little flexed (bent). And it's a bit more of a push to get the key in to open the seat latch. But the straps under the seat are far away from the seat mounting points! (Message edited by fahren on June 23, 2009) |

Fahren: You've got the bags for an S on your long. I've got the same set on my Ss. One of the straps goes right across the battery terminals, one interferes with the seat latch, and the small straps at the bottom that are supposed to go around the rear reflectors aren't attached to anything. The dealer gave me the 3 pieces when I bought the bike and they work otherwise, so I'm not complaining. (Message edited by saratoga on June 23, 2009) |

The small rear straps I was able to thread thru the slotted holes of the rear side reflector mounts and back onto the other half of the velcro on the bags - see photo. For the top 3 straps, the rear-most is under the frame, and exposed to all the road muck my tire can throw (I know - "wash the bike, Chris..." We have had a lot of rain here...). The front-most strap is threaded between battery and ECM. The middle strap is a straight run thru thin air under the seat. All straps away from seat mounting points! will post photo separately. Dug around in my files, and found the instruction sheet. The way Fahren has them placed in his first photos is the way shown the instructions. |
