I've done some research on the KV without luck but here is my question: 2003 XB9S My fuel pump wiring harness was leaking gas so I decided to fix it myself. Well, as you may know, you have to take the swingarm off to pull the fuel pump. Long story short, the fuel pump is fixed but now I have concerns about my drive belt. I noticed that the belt hangs off the tension pulley idler by about 1/16th" to the inside!?! When I roll the bike in reverse, the belt walks to the outside of the idler and is flush to 1/16th" over on the outside. Is this by any chance normal? I can't say whether this has been this way all along or if I screwed something up. Seeing as to how there is ZERO adjustability am I stuck? Any insight or feedback on observations of your drivebelt behavior would be a HUGE help. P.S. I am in Greenville, SC and the nearest dealer is ~2 hours away so........ |

While this doesnt answer your question I just pushed it forward\reverse to check for the same thing to my 06 XB9 (20k on bike\belt) and it doesnt walk at all across the pulley. (Message edited by Caféelite on June 19, 2009) |

I called the dealer but didn't get a warm and fuzzy because their first suggestion was that it needed to be adjusted!?! Anyone who knows anything knows there is no adjustment. On the KV I read that the belt walk because of the woven construction. I did wonder if I have it on backwards? Is there a forward and a backwards? |

No, the winding faces the same, no matter what direction you install the belt. Belt walking, especially in reverse, is perfectly normal. Go ride. |

Not true, but if you do have the resources to take the swingarm off, it will make accessing the pump easier. |

Mine walked a little from the beginning. Mine walked a little after I replaced the belt. It's normal. |

I think that you need to loosen off the pinch bolt, undo the rear axle a few turns, and then tension it up again and do up the pinch bolt. It is the last part of the procedure for reinstalling the rear wheel. The belt can start running out if this isn't done after a wheel or belt change. It can also happen after a mishap or if forces are applied to the wheel. It happened to mine after it was strapped to a trailer. |
