I'm sure this has been asked before. The search feature is a little beyond me, though. On the freeway at 80mph, is it normal to be at 4800rpm? Just seemed a little high. I was looking for 6th, but that's only on the S1's, huh? |

Seems high, doesn't it? Taking a long run (100+ miles) straight at that has got to be bad. |

i'm guessing its a 9r and not a 12. my 12 runs just over 4000 at 80 mph |

The XB12 has taller gearing, you can swap the primary chain and primary sprocket to drop you a few hundred RPM. 6th gear is only on the watercooled models. |

You guess correctly. That would be a 9R. RPM range is appropriate as well. It's a Buell spec engine, not a Sportster anymore. |

Based purely on math; at 80 mph you should be running 4400 RPM. So either your tach is off, or the clutch is slipping a bit. My bet is you tach is not accurate, none of them are. So stay calm, at 80 mph the engine is really only turning 4400 RPM. And don't fear its ment to run there! |

4100 @ 80 in my Uly. The 12 primary is pretty linear for easy math - I get about 3k at 60, 3500 at 70....but she loves to cruise at 90 or so (4500ish). Used to like 80, but the race ecm I just put in seems to have woken her up a bit...it's all the computer's fault, I swear But the numbers you're seeing sound about right for a 9 primary ratio. |

It will do this Here is the XB9 gearing. The XB9's have a slightly higher redline, so you can get a few more MPH in each gear than whats posted here. The graphs are a XB12 with stock gearing and XB12 with the 9 gearing. |

Bah. I try to pull up for sixth at least once per ride. The bike has the torque to run highway speeds at 3000. Yea, I doubt it'd help the with max speed, but would it have killed Buell to put one in? |

I found the gearing on my 12 too low from the start. I wanted to keep the belt so I had a 42 tooth primary made and added 2 links to the chain. It now does 60mph at just under 2700 RPM and 80 mph at just under 3600 RPM. I don't miss the low first, and I don't keep looking for 6th. 7% better fuel consumption on the highway. I find it works. |

For a bike that redlines at 7500 running around 4500 doesn't seem bad. If you don't like 4500 never buy an IL4 where there is little power below 7500 |

Cool......... (I don't know what an IL4 is) Also, think anything might be off because it was a 900 with 1200 pistons and heads on it? Does that change anything when it comes to speed, rpm range, and gauges? For some reason, I thought it would. |

Jake, assuming you are still running the same stock size tire, same stock belt, you should be the same as the XB9 chart above. Your profile pic looks like a stock belt, so check that your rear tire is a 180/55/17. If that is correct, odds are either your tach or speedo is lying. The stock speedo is a little off at higher speeds, and tends to read a little high. |

Tire is 190/55 17 Maybe that has sumthin to do with it. |

You might note...just because a tire says xxx/xx-17...does not make the tire outer diameters the same...on every brand of tire...! Go measure a few..you'll see. And it doesn't take much outer diameter difference to alter the speed. Mike |
