The fuse for my cooling fan on my 07 XB12R started blowing today. It'll run for a minute, then blow. Bad connection or is the fan going bad drawing too many amps? Anybody want to chime in? thanks! |

Mine was doing the same on my XB12X. Ended up being a leak from the rear rocker box which ended up taking out the fan. But yeah, thats how it started, fan didn't come on, replaced the fuse a couple times and kept blowing. My warranty was up so I just bought a new fan at my dealer and was going to replace it and that's when I saw the leak. My dealer was good though and covered it even though my warranty had just expired. |

Now that you mention it, I wonder if I have a leak. I noticed a film of oil on the fan and wires, but thought that it was just from the breather line or airbox. i guess I won't know for sure until I get in there. Is it a big job? I have not purchased the manual yet, but I plan on it. I just bought the bike two weeks ago. I bought it used, and I doubt there's any warranty left. |

The fan itself isn't to hard to replace. The hardest part being that the rear shock has to come off. If its an oil leak they have to drop the engine to get to it. You could check the breather line cap on the rear head, it just pops in, to make sure its tight. You have to take the airbox cover off to get to it and remove the bottom of the air filter cover. For the rear rocker leak, take a flashlight and look in between the rear cylinder and the frame. Thats where most of my oil leak was at. The fan wasn't all that expensive something like $67.00 give or take. My work order from the dealer had two hours ($95.00 an hour) + parts to replace the upper and lower rocker box gaskets and then an hour to replace the fan. The funny part was that they called me to approve two hours of time to research a code 36. So I'm like sure. Do what ya gotta do. So they actually take 2 1/2 hours to research why the fan won't run after it was installed. Well, when I took it in the fuse blew right as I got to the dealership and the tech didn't replace it so of course it wasn't going to run. They took that off the invoice. : ) |

OK, I've got the shock bolts out and I can see how to get the fan out, no big deal. But to get the shock out of the way, do I need to take the hydraulic line off at the top of the shock? Is the fluid under pressure? Sorry, no manual til tomorrow or tuesday! |

no.. just unbolt it at the top and hold/tilt it away so you can get to the fan. i didnt even use the manual to replace mine, its standard procedure. I had a rear stand and a $20 jack from autozone: the stand stabilized the bike, but since your going to remove the shock-mount you need a separate jack under the bike to prevent the bike from collapsing I happen to have picks

Nice - It looks simple with the tail section removed, but I didn't realize all that had to be removed too. There's a wiring harness, etc... |

Thanks for the extra pic. You gotta Love Erik's engineering, huh? These things are just so easy to work on. Probably shouldn't have said that... |

Stewadi, I'm glad they covered it for you, but I did some investigating on mine and the fan motor is a completely sealed unit. I think it's unlikely that any oil got in there. There's a sealed bearing on the shaft end and the plastic case top is completely glued to the metal case. Just wanted to share that I've heard they die for no apparent reason. Some last long, some not... |
