I got an XB9 primary chain and sprocket a while back for $25. A mom and pop Harley shop was parting out a wrecked XB9 and didn't know what it was worth - Craigslist ad just said they were parting it out. Anyway I didn't want to mess with it so I brought it to the dealer today. They swapped the gear and chain, replace all the o-rings, gaskets and seals and filled it up with Screaming Eagle synthetic for $165 ... and washed it too. I like it. ... 0-100 is much faster now! I do keep forgetting what gear I am in while cruising around so I have to get used the the slightly higher RPM's. |

Nice! What speed do you top out at now? |

When you calm down and cruise somewhere on the highway, I want to know your 5th gear mpg. |

Is there anyway to correct the speedometer with this? |

top speed should be about 10-15 less. swapping primary gears will not correct the speedo, nor give cause for it to be corrected. |

Here is a chart of a XB12 with stock and then XB9 gearing

You can see for yourself. Don't shift into 5th gear, 4th gear is almost the same as 5th gear on the XB9 primary. I did that for some testing, and noticed 10-15% fuel economy loss last time I tested it.

The final drive is unchanged therefor no speedo correction is necessary. |

As I understand it. The reason to do the primary swap, is for better bottom end response and drivability at low RPMs. So I guess my question is, according to the above charts, WHO can tell the difference between 10 or 11 mph at just off idle??? Does it really make a difference in the slow speed realms? Just askin'. Bill. |

Mrbill, most that do the swap are Uly riders doing offroading where it can really help, and those who do a lot of commuting in stop and go environments. |
