I am about to start commuting on my 9R, about 40 Mi each way. I am planning on getting some warmer gear. Right now I have Alpinestars Track pants and TZ-1 jacket. I am thinking a textile setup would be fine and saw the Fieldsheer 4 Season pant as well as the Congo sport jacket. Thought these two might keep me a bit warmer. I would like to keep the price reasonable and the pants have to be able to be worn over my slacks. What are you all wearing?

I brought up Santa Cruz and why would you need more than rain gear? I wear my Buell mesh jacket with the rain insert down to 40. Sometimes I put on an extra shirt when it gets chilly. I wear a DriStar jacket to 25 and a one piece snow suit to single digits. Below that I get in the Jeep cause I don't like riding on ice. Get something with a little room inside for a sweater and long johns. If you need more heat than that get an electric vest. I've been thinking about one.

My Aerostitch Roadcrafter 1 piece is the ultimate in commuter gear. It comes off in seconds, and easily goes on over my work "outfit". 99% of the time I make it wrinkle free. Plenty of ventilation and good for riding year round in upstate NY where we get everything from subzero to well over a hundred degrees F. Just throw in a heated liner for the winter and your golden. : )

Don't know how it works down there, but I've found that the Buell line is actually well priced against the other clothes. I wished I'd know that when I bought my gear. Probably would have got the Buell mesh instead, I'm seriously considering the Turbulent jacket.

Anyway, I wear Joe Rocket mesh overpants and jacket in the hot, and a bigger leather jacket for the cold. I've got the Buell Adventure pants as overpants and I like them better. Their only drawback is that you have to take your boots off first. Joe Rockets has zippers down the side and that is a lot easier.

I don't commute or ride daily, I ride 2 to 3 days a week. I just got a Fieldsheer Congo Air Mesh jacket 3 weeks ago for warm to hot days. Do a search and you will find it for $99.99. pm me if you have trouble. I have a Icon motorhead for warm, cool, and cold riding. I Live in Dallas TX so we get to the 100's F in the summer. So far the Congo Air works very well at keeping me cool. Even at stop lights it doesn't get hot. We have only gotten to the high 80's low 90's F so far this year so I still have some temps to go. It is well constructed with heavier mesh on the shoulders, elbows and back. Every where else it is see through, at about 30% light pas through (just guessing, no scientific testing). I feel absolutely safe in the jacket but in my opinion it is a one or two crash jacket, as opposed to the Icon which seems indestructible. But I have not seen a mesh jacket that comes even close to leather. It is everything that I could expect and want from a hot weather mesh jacket. I know my post is long but I hope it helps your decision. I am still looking for riding pants.

If you can't afford the 'stitch, the First Gear jacket and pants are decent for commuting. Both have zip out liners that are very warm and are waterproof.

Add polly grip heaters to the bike if you don't have heaters already...

That setup (and a hood / neck gaiter thing) will cover you down to around 40 degrees, 30 if you are young and stupid. ; )

My commuter gear consists of luggage and an Olympia Stealth riding suit. It isn't too great from the mid 50s and below but otherwise pretty good. You do want to move in the summer because it works much better when wind is flowing through the mesh panels.
